There are dozens of magazine articles on 351w strokers. Review a bunch. On the block you want it checked for cracks and how much over it needs before you do anything with it.
Are you sure it's a 351W? The factory 351 engine in 1981 would have been the 351M.
As for all the build questions, you should find a good machinist/engine builder who can guide you; in fact, he should be doing most of the detailed work if you want to end up with something you can have some confidence in. My opinion.
Depending on money , if buying a 408 stroker kit , cast or forged , buy a balanced kit , takes alot of hassel out of it , there are also short blocks or long blocks for sale ! . Some 205 cc intake port heads would most likely be big enough for a truck with a nice hydraulic roller . Other important things that can be done like torque plate honing , zero deck the pistons good for squish and tumble , anti detonation stuff . Then is it efi or carb for cam selection . So much to choose from .Cheers
Built my stroker years ago before all the kits came out made from eagle crank , probe rods arp 2000 rod bolts and arias pistons . I think the scat kits would be fine you need to choose between forged or cast . Or a dart or world products short block . Cheers
I would recommend a hydraulic roller it will save a lot of problems with low zinc oils easy first engine run up etc and make more power. Better than wiping out a lobe and having all that debris through the new engine ! .
I always like forged , much stronger pistons and crank , but you pay more . 4032 pistons up to 600 hp , 2618 pistons for power adders, cast or hyperutectic pistons for stock to mild , these don't like detonation . Cheers
Forged pistons are noisy. You will have a lot of piston skirt knock when the engine is cold. That is one of the main reasons they came out with the hyperutectic pistons, they can be fit much tighter in the bore like a cast piston can. I believe a tighter fit also helps ring sealing. Noise and oil usage not a concern with a all out race engine, but can be aggravating on a street engine.
Honestly I would check online to see if there is a builder that offers a 408W stroker short block that way you can piece it together yourself. I know you said you have the 351W already but by time you get all the machine work done you will be about at the same cost. Some places will actually let you ship your block to them and they will do the work.
I think you will find 4032 forged are not noisy , they have less expansion and a lot less less clearance around .003", alot less than the old forged pistons from years ago , franklin is correct the 2618 do have more clearance until they warm up i don't think you require this type at your horsepower level .
