I picked a 78 F250 Ranger Lariat 2WD a few months ago, and it's been a great truck to have. However, the engine is old and tired and I'm considering swapping it out with a Remanned 460 from ATK Engines. I'm going to swap out the C6 for a AOD from Monster Transmission and Performance. My question is about the Remanned engine from ATK Engines. They have one that is non smog built and one that is built for smog applications. I wanted to know engine specs between the two, and if it is worth getting the smog rated engine to use as a daily driver. After the engine and transmission are swapped out, I'm going to put airbags in for the suspension, a new wiring harness, and some body work and I'll be off to the races. Thanks in advance for your input.
You asked for input so here is mine :-). AOD never was behind 385 series engines (429/460) so won't mate to those engines without an aftermarket adapter - Monster Transmission may have something custom there I don't know. I would keep the next-to-bulletproof C6 and look into Gear Vendors overdrive. Pricey but stout, likely no more $$ than the AOD you are considering. Being 2wd and long bed is about as simple as it gets.
In regards to buying a remanned engine, I always prefer to take my engine to a reputable shop and have it rebuilt rather than buy a remanned one. You can work with the guys doing the work and know exactly what you're having installed.
The Gear Vendor is a great idea, btw. Not cheap at all but a good idea. A buddy has one in his 1972 C20 and it is awesome.
There are 2 adaptors for AOD to 460. Looked in to it myself to avoid buying the $1000 controller to run the E4od. What you would spend making the AOD handle the power (+ the adaptor), you end up money ahead to get the E4od. As for smog, depends on your local laws. I'm in Arizona and it is different in my county than it is in Phoenix. I don't have to do emissions crap here. I would avoid smog engines if you can.
