I'm to the point on my build where I need to lengthen the drive shaft but I need help with how much longer to make it. The pic is with it bottomed out in the slip yoke. I only have a few inches of suspension travel so it wont be sliding in the slip yoke too much. I'm thinking about 2 and a half inches longer but I wanted some other opinions before I take it to the drive shaft shop
Well what's your slip yoke length? You want to go 2/3 of the slip yoke in and then measure. To lengthen a driveshaft is just a matter of removing the old tube and install a new longer tube.
I haven't taken that measurement but I'll have to do that tomorrow. The first probably 2 inches of the slip yoke are smooth too before the splines start
Hey Rowdy, I went to a well known at least in my part of the world, one man shop who has been doing driveshafts for 30+ years. He told me that due to the way Ford makes the CV driveshafts the yolks cannot be reused to lengthen the DS and he'll need to make a complete new one.
As I recall driveshafts are measured center point to center point at the universal joints. So I installed the CV DS into the trans and measured the distance from the differential flange to the rear flange on the DS. We did this with the rear suspension loaded. I then added that to the length of the CV driveshaft.
My truck is a long bed and the DS came in at 70 1/2 inches. Some say that's on the long side. My guy said at my horse power (225 HP) and using a 3 1/2 inch diameter tube I should be fine. Out the door it was $300.00.
I'm pretty sure I'm remembering all of this correctly, you may want to Google to confirm. Best of luck, Pat
