Drilling lug holes into a wheel.

I want my trailer wheels to be a close match to my trucks wheels. Considering drilling lug holes in a 6.5 pattern between the OEM holes of F250/excursion wheels to fit Dexter hubs.

Wont be much "meat" left for securing support with all them holes. Think the center would be compromised

Sounds pretty ghetto, but if you are hell bent on trying it, you will need a good machine shop to line it up right, assuming you can find one that will even do it for you (huge liability in that, it seems).

I would just get the right wheels...

I’ve seen drill guides for various 5 lug patterns but never a 170 to 6.5

this guy has 6.5 to 170 adapters, maybe he will make it in reverse for you and then just use an adapter.

What you are wanting to do can't be done safely. I did a set of Alcoa wheels that were 8x6.5 and redrilled them for 8x170. I painstakingly tig welded and filled every hole and then cut the front and back wheel face on a 3 axis mill. I then drilled out the 8x170. I had so many hours invested I would never do it ever again.

Aftermarket rim companies off a dual bolt pattern so apparently “safety” is not a concern.

If you have the skills to run a mill and machine the required tolerances then I don’t see a problem.

Yes there is plenty of dual bolt pattern wheels. But there is no dual pattern 8 lug 8x6.5 and 8x170 there is no room to do it.

Here is a 8x6.5 and 8x170 dual pattern rim
https://www.bbwheelsonline.com/mayhe...m-8106-2176BM/

and here is a 8x6.5 to 8x170 adapter, somehow both companies found the room to have both patterns

Aren't the Dexter axle hubs lug centric? If true, then isn't the trailer wheel centered via the lugs? Are not the wheel nuts conical for said centering?

We already know that the Ford dually wheels (referencing OP's signature rig) are hub centric, with flat swiveling compression wheel nuts.

There seems to be more incompatibility here than just the bolt circle diameter.

Those are engineered to be that way.

Just drilling holes in wheels is not the same thing.

adapters, you can just use the when you need to or use the adapter as a hole guide to drill.

if you invested so far into the adapters, you might use them and not just for a pattern. Can pop your hub off if you want a pattern.

The plethora of wheels in todays market, there isnt a knock-off made yet? I remember the Iroks being 1 of them being 5x4.50 or 5x5 on up to 20's..

Guys, I want to emphasize, this is for my trailer.
I question where the trade off is at with strength, between a wheel with 16 lug holes vs adding adaptors.
I also acknowledge that srw excursion/F250/F350 wheel slots are not a perfect match.
Another curiosity, would the wheels be hub centric or lug?
Wheels made in China are not an option for me. That is half of my issue.
China made wheels are on my 2018 trailer now. I want them off.
I check CL daily.

I raised this question upthread.

All the Dexter axles I have are lug centric. The holes in the wheels have a tapered seat, and the lug nuts have a conical mating surface that nests into the tapered seat of the wheel lug holes to accomplish the concentric location of the wheel about the rotating axis of the hub. I have three large cargo trailers currently, each with two (tandem) axles. In every case for all the trailers I've owned, the wheels are lug centric, with tapered seats at the wheel holes.

A better option might be to have the hubs drilled to match the wheels. As a bonus you can then share a spare. Check for backspacing before you embark on drilling vs. adapters.
