Looking at at 2012
A high end new car dealer has one for sale. They got it at an auction. Only 75,000 miles, one owner. Took it to my guy to have it checked out. He called me and said, did you know that this has the delete already done? He says it's illegal for them to sell it to me. He said everything looks fine. So I'm guessing the dealership has no idea. My question is how do I handle this? The price is good, in my opinion. Do I just go ahead and get it and be thankful I don't have to pay for the delete? Do I tell the dealership and try to negotiate? Do I buy it and if something goes wrong later take it back and let them know that they sold me a truck they shouldn't have? Should I be nervous that it may have be abused, ie raced, etc...?

Do you have access to the tuner/tunes that are on this truck? If you do not and you still want the truck, you'll need to consider purchasing a tuner and custom tunes that'll erase the PCM/TCM and upload firmware you can control. Is there any indication that the previous owner was monitoring EGT's? You will have no way of knowing how the truck was treated without knowing it's history. For example, is the current tune +150 HP? That isn't necessarily bad for someone who knows what they're doing but can be if the PO didn't understand the risks and pay attention.
If you still choose to purchase it based on the review from your technician, it absolutely has an elevated risk that you are willing to accept by purchasing vs instead purchasing a stock used truck. I'm less of a risk taker so I would pass on a used, tuned truck with unknown history. Plus, why did it go to auction? This PSD 6.7L engine is a good one but expensive to replace if it fails.

There are many on this forum who have deleted trucks just to get rid of emissions. Just because a truck has been deleted doesn’t mean that it has been abused. The general condition of the truck could give you an idea of how the truck was treated. An immaculate truck that has been deleted would bother me far less than a truck that doesn’t look well cared for, deleted or not. I would have it thoroughly checked out by a qualified tech and heed their advice.

Boom, get it. I would...especially not having to pay for a delete. Since it has gauges,that means it has been monitored and a better chance it has been well cared for. As far a s illegal, I wouldn't bring it up just because they could say they won't sell it at all now to avoid trouble.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a truck that has had any kind of engine modification or tuner added. You have no idea if the work was done correctly and modifications can decrease engine life span and reliability. Part of the reasons I just ordered a new F350.

I never said OP had to get a new truck. I just recommended steering clear of modded and tuned trucks. I'm not exactly rolling in dough either, but I couldn't see paying $45k-$55k for a three or four year old truck with 50,000 miles and possibly abused, nodded or tuned. Hence my choice to get a new truck. If you want to delete, mod, or tune your diesel, more power to you (no pun intended). The aftermarket and diesel repair shops will love you.

My only concern would be the original turbo. The turbo likes to take a dump around that mileage. What kind of price are they asking? Better yet have you run an oasis or a vin check on it?

I haven't run a vin check. What would that show me? They are asking $35,000. I noticed a couple other things that we are gong to discuss when it comes to finalizing the price. They are refining the brakes and fixing a couple other little things.

An oasis report or vin check should show any major work done or recalls completed. Let us know what happens. Turbos are farirly easy to replace on these from what I understand. That wouldn't scare me personally.
