Hello, I have a 1997 f250 HD with a 7.5L and I’ve just experienced the problem where, while the engine is running the brake pedal goes to the floor and dosent return unless pulled up manually. If the engine is off the pedal feels firm doesn’t go to the floor and returns. this happened after I replaced the rear drum brake shoes. Previously I had an abs light on but the pedal worked just fine, but after replacing the brakes shoes the light went off and now the pedal goes to the floor and sticks. I’ve tried bleeding the rear brakes and the abs system. I’ve heard y’all about replacing the abs system, the master cylinder and the brake booster. But I don’t have the money to replace all three as I assume it would be pretty expensive. I would like to just replace what is necessary. What could it be?
Take a look at the area under your master cylinder,. Is it wet with brake fluid down on the fender well? I had a problem with my truck where the proportioning valve went bad and was leaking. If it is wet underneath there ,start the truck and have someone watch the master cylinder for leaks as you hit the brakes.

If you didn't disconnect any brake lines, air in the system should not be the problem. The two things that come to mind are the booster or the rear brakes have not been adjusted properly. Did you do proper rear brake adjustment after install? Can you hear any hissing from your brake booster when the pedal is pressed? Sandy
Oh I have seen this one before, you have a faulty brake booster. You can conform this by disconnecting and plugging the vacuum to the booster while the engine is running, you will see the brake pedal return to the up position.
This problem has nothing to do with potentially improperly adjusted rear brakes, the pedal would not stick to the floor even if that was the case.

I did as you mentioned, and like you said the pedal popped straight back up. So I need to replace the brake booster? Do they just die one day? Not like a steady decline in functionality?

No we didn’t mess with the brake lines. And I believe I did adjust them right, I had to I guess “tighten” the she’s so the drum would fit over them and then “loosened” them so they barley touch the drum. Also no hissing from the brake booster when the pedal is pressed

Yes, and yes they just up an die like that. When it happened to me the truck drove fine one day and the next as soon as I started it up the pedal went to the floor and the truck wouldn't move, I had not been doing any work on the truck before this happened either.

alright, looks like I’m getting a brake booster then. Won’t be too soon though, maybe next weekend. Thanks again! I’ll keep y’all posted if that fixes the problem.

well I managed to get a new one sooner than expected, I installed it and it did not fix the problem. What do I do now?
