Can you run Shell Rotella T4 10w-30 in a 93 f150 302?
OK I've gotta do an oil change, I'm wanting to use Shell oil, Rotella T4 looks like it will work, (according to API if it's got a SN certification it's good.) Is this correct?
Your engine will love it but the smog ***** won't. If you burn a little oil and run a catalytic converter, might plug-up a little quicker. If it's super cold might be a little more cavitation prone. 5w40 Rotella would be a year-round choice.
If lubrication were your only problem your engine would outlast several truck bodies. Almost any modern oil is better than you need.
If your oil temp is hot enough to cook out the moisture, your oil lasts longer, engine lives longer.
Yeah some guys were telling me that since Rotella is "diesel" motor oil it won't run I'm my truck. Maybe I'll contact Ford and Shell see if they know anything.
I've been running Lordco Ultra Grade Diesel oil 15-40 in almost every vehicle I've owned for the past 10+ years. It is like $12 a jug. Most of everything I drive though has higher miles. Haven't touched the fluid on the pickup I just got yet as it is still golden.
Hasn't hurt the Grand Marq in 5 years... Probably wouldn't want to run a heavy oil during winter but if you have a block heater...might as well use it. I'm in the interior BC, Canada.
I'd say just run what it says to use. If it calls for 5-30 or 5-20 do so.
Pretty sure a 10w-30 is the same as 5w-30 at operating temp but 10w is quite thicker upon start...I can't remember I found a neat link worth the read again...
10w30 is too heavy? I'm in south Louisiana, so Temps don't get to low.
From what I have read 10W30 is fine and I believe that is what is recommended for the 302. This subject is so debatable that ultimately you will have to decide. Sandy

I'm considering using T-4 also for my '92 4.9L I6. The diesel oils have a higher phosphorus and zinc content which (from what I've researched) than the newer synthetic and dino motor oils. These additives impart a surface film on flat tappet camshafts and bearing surfaces. I have been running high mileage NAPA 10-40 dino oil by Valvoline and am concerned about wiping a lobe.
My ‘87 Bronco owner’s manual lists both 10W-30 & 10W-40 as the preferred oil above 0° F and my ‘89 F-150 manual has 10W-30 as the preferred oil above 0°F.
