Parts made from unobtainium

I thought this might be an entertaining post. What parts are impossible, or next to impossible to find?

Here is my list, which is Bonus Built related, the spectrum of Ford trucks I know the most about. I am sure they are parts for other vintages that are extremely hard to find so post them.

#1 '48-52 panel truck passenger seat
#2 '48-52 panel truck rear doors
#3 '48-52 Express box for F-2/3 pickups
#4 '48-52 Running boards for above box
#5 '48-52 Tailgate for above box
#6 '48-52 rear fenders for above box
#7 '48-52 F-2/3/4/5/6 brake drums in usable condition (I know, different drums for each model and model style, but all are hard to find)
#8 '48-50 working stock radio (non-working radios a slightly easier to find)
#9 '48-52 under front fender heater tube (Again, different designs but still hard to find that aren't totally rotted out)
#10 '48-52 F-4/5/6 one piece or serviceable multi-part replacement wheels

I’ll agree with your list Bob. I’ll add that finding a NOS nose badge for the 1952 six cylinder (215) engine qualifies too. Add to the list the tubeless 19.5” SRW style wheels, both eight lug for F-2/3/250, and six lug for the F-350s. And hardest of all are some of the M-H parts as we’ve discussed in the current transfer case thread. Stu

I would add a correct original mandrel bent metal tube for making the upper radiator hose connection for a 215 cid I6 engine. I thought mine was missing and did some investigating. Fortunately my original pipe turned up. It was in pretty rough condition, but when I learned how difficult they are to find, I cleaned mine up to look presentable.

Ditto that. I got my NOS pipe from our friend Ilya (51panelman) after searching and finding that the Ford approved later substitute was a totally different piece. Stu

A water pump for the 226 flathead engine. Or a CORRECT rebuilt kit for the same. Rebuild kits are often listed for the truck but won't fit anything but the car style pump.
226 engine exhaust manifolds and air deflector shields for the same.
226 engine draft tubes.

Have plenty ( boxes full ) of #9 how ever the blower motor housings that attach to the upper inner RF fender are so very hard to find not rotted out . That was not one of Henry's best ideas .Stock jacks that mount behind the seat on the RS for'48 -'51 F-1's .Original spare tire supports '48-'52 . V-8 fan shrouds that are not cut out on the bottom .'51 -'52 motor cover badges .Lighted lucite cable control panel for '51 Magic Air heaters .'48-'52 COE Magic Air heaters . Have only found one '51-'52 in 11 yrs. of parts hunting . Am going to try & talk a guy out o a '49-'50 FORD Script fresh air heater on the "Great fall 2018 Parts Safari " in Oct . so get your request in . Also '51 -'52 5 star extra cab side hood moldings that are not all dinged up . Will have a set after the Parts Safari .

A lot of stuff for the 53 to trucks is reproduced. But hood side emblems for F250 and up are not. So F250 and up emblems that are not pitted are hard to find and expensive.

Forgot about that one. I was given a junk engine with a perfect exhaust manifold. The guy was in a hurry to get it out of his barn and decided to push the cart the engine was on over the wooden threshold of the door and dumped the engine on its side and broke the exhaust manifold. Took the engine straight to the scrap yard.

I’ll play. How about a good cylinder head with NO CRACKS for a 223? After the 4th one in a row got condemned by the machine shop, I had had enough and torpedoed the 6 banger.

Maybe, or probably, I’m the only guy that cares that this set of wheels is so far proving to be unobtainium. This is 7RC 1015. The 15” x 5.50F” semi-drop center, heavy duty, two part wheel that is referenced in the Service Manual and brought up here on occasion when guys think (incorrectly) that 15” one piece wheels were optional on 1948-1952s. I’ve traced this wheel starting from its 3/21/47 engineering drawings found at the Ford Research Library (see footnote). Those drawings show the number changed from 7RC 1015 to 7RC 1007-A, then my Ford O.S.I. and wheel industry references show it again changed to TAAA 1007-A / K-H 36877 in 1953. In 1954 K-H changed the wheels’ offset reducing it from .62” to .25”, changing their number to 37717, with Ford changing its number to TAAA 1007-B. I’ve asked one of our better 53-56 guys if he’d ever seen either of these wheels on a truck and he has not. But I keep looking.

Footnote:

One of the people doing the research on my request at the Benson Ford Research Library was James K. Wagner. Himself. The author of the foundation book on the subject of Ford trucks, Ford Trucks Since 1905. Mr. Wagner lives near Dearborn and volunteers at the Library one day per week. He is a genuinely nice person, and helped greatly in this research. Stu

almost done with my build and will have to go through the "leftovers" later this fall... i've got the 215 radiator tube and the F3 express bed running boards; they're not perfect but may be useful to someone. some stuff already junked after nobody local wanted it, but i'll be sure to make a list and post here.
