heat shielding and stuff related

I'm beginning to look at exhaust system for the truck and plan on 2.5" duals off Sanderson coated headers with Magnaflow mufflers. Exhaust will exit either in front of rear wheels our out the back depending on my exhaust man's talent and available room. There are some areas that I think should be shielded from heat... ie. starter, fuel tank, close proximity to wiring in looms... Initially I was considering completely wrapping pipes from collector back but I've decided against wrapping pipes due to many negative comments and articles and warranty voiding by header makers... so I'm looking into heat shields in specific areas that will need it... like between mufflers and bed wood (maybe 6" distance), fuel tank at rear (depending on routing) and several areas where plastic wire loom might suffer...

tell me all you know and what you've done about heat shielding if anything... or am I trying to wear a belt AND suspenders

john

I was determined to have my tailpipes exit at the rear, shows what I did in my build thread. I used an aluminum driveshaft I got from a F150 and split it length wise and to length for a heat shield to protect the underside of the bed wood . Summit Racing sells many different lengths and sizes of heat shield material with Velcro strips to wrap cables, hoses whatever you desire to protect..

John If you plan on driving that beautiful truck, don't exit in front of the rear wheels. I thank my muffler man for insisting that my exhaust go completely out the back. He knew I planned to drive it (16,000 + miles since 2012) and he knew the drone from side exhausts would cancel out normal conversation or tunes with the windows down. I have a couple of heat shields built and installed by my muffler man but I'm sure my little 351 doesn't make as much heat as that big block 460 will. Good luck and remember CTC is only 3 1/2 weeks away!!! Steve

I had to run my tailpipes under the rearend but was able to get 2.5'' pipes out the back and clear rear fuel tank. Are you using stainless pipe? Borla mufflers are 304 stainless, magna flow uses 409 that will rust.

Not sure if they have always used 409 but the new ones are, the 304 polishes up real nice too.

John I plan on trying to make all stamping sites on Thursday and hit the swap meet Friday morning. Will most likely set up at cruise central Friday afternoon. I'm commuting again this year since
most motels want a 3 night minimum. I'm only 100 miles north so I get to drive the truck more and sleep in my own bed. Win/Win for me. See you there, Steve

I'll have to dig up the specs bought them in 2004... they've been keeping my shelf very muffled since then !

Stainless does not bend well so be prepared , there is a thread here some where explaining drone and the theory behind it in a nutshell equal exhaust pulses create a drone . Changing the distance to muffler or pipe size on either side will eliminate drone .

I had a 2 ½” 304 stainless exhaust system installed by Mustang Racing Team (MRT) in Plymouth, MI. They did a great job with their mandrel bender of tucking it up. In tight spots the wrapped it with special wide heat shield tape. I would only do this with 304 SS. I have seen pictures of steel headers that rot out under the tape. Probably not good with 409 SS either.

No, I don’t have any pictures and I am in Florida right now. I don’t have the IRS like yours and my tight areas are around the 4R70W trans. So not much help anyhow.

You need to find someone with a mandrel bender that has 304 SS pipe near you. It is all custom work.

My truck is apart to paint frame so no pictures right now. My 4 bar is on the outside of frame but my truck sets low with a big kickup over rearend. That is why I went under rear axle. I bought a " builders'' kit off ebay, It had several maderal bends and straight tubing all in usa made 304 ss, I will see if I can find the place I ordered from. Modern auto performance was the place I got the tubing from, about $320 for the kit. It was more than enough to build whole system. Larry
