I have a 1994 Ford F-250 4x4 with an E4OD 4th gear issue. Has a 5.8 in it. Shifts great thru 1,2 and 3 but I have to let out of the throttle for it to shift into 4th or overdrive, but as soon as I give it throttle again it downshifts back into 3rd. Used to the torque converter would lock up pretty much the same time it shifted into 4th. I can still feel the torque converter lock up but like I said won’t shift into overdrive unless I let off the throttle then downshifts back into 3rd as soon as I give it throttle. I’ve pulled the codes and none are present other than an Egr code. I’m thinking I have a throttle position sensor problem but no codes for the tps are stored. Anybody have any ideas?
No bouncing speedo. I didn’t notice it before but the check engine light did come on and off for a brief second when I was driving it and it was shifting back and forth. Occasionally I will get hard 1 to 2 shifts I’m assuming it’s upping the line pressure to attempt to protect itself.
Yes it has been shifting great then I let it set for a few weeks. I jumped in it to go get some lumber and it shifted great for about 5 miles then started to not shift into overdrive until I lifted off the throttle then would immediately down shift when I gave it throttle. Now it’s doing it all the time.
Agree with above poster - you should at least have a stored code. If you have an OBD-1, clear it out and then go replicate the problem. As soon as it does, immediately check the codes again. If the CEL got triggered, there must be something in there. Does your OD light come on or flash on your shift lever when it starts acting up?
Yep. My PSOM is getting rebuilt right now. I've dumped alot of time and money into a very simple issue. If you think It might be the PSOM, I have an extra 92 instrument cluster w/ tach I will sell. (a 92 cluster won't work on a 94 so I found out).
Blockson98,
This past July 2018 while starting to drive on an annual fishing vacation, my 95 F-150, 5.0L E4OD was acting similar to your symptoms. The cabin we stayed in had wifi, so I asked our forum and was advised to check all brake lights. My third brake socket was somewhat melted and lose to hold the bulb. I replaced all bulbs when I restored the truck in 2008/09. The bulb wasn't burnt out, but was loos in the somewhat melted socket. I was able to carefully squeeze the socket enough to provide needed contact. My erratic overdrive shifting was resolved. Once getting back home off vacation, I cut out the affected (melted) third brake socket and soldered another one I had. Recommend checking all your brake lights, to see if one is burnt or has a lose socket. Hopefully it will be a simple fix like mine was.

That's wise advice.Even though that wouldn't actually be losing OD but instead the converter unlocking/not locking at all and OD with an unlocked converter one might feel as if they're in 3rd with a locked converter so kinda tricky there.
It's possible the op is being tricked with an unlocked converter as well and has either faulty brake light sockets/blown bulbs and or bad brake switch causing the same issue.
I have checked all brake lights and everything is in good working order. When I got home from work I hooked up my scanner and went to deliver a mower. I drove a 45 min round trip and it shifted perfect the entire trip. I guess I’ll leave the scanner hooked up and just drive it and hopefully I can catch it acting up again. I had replaced the MLPS about 5 years ago. I have an extra transmission so I swapped them the other day and it still acted the same. My MLPS comes in from the top. Is there a new updated one?
The torque converter is locking and unlocking correctly so I don’t think is a brake light issue either. I definitely know the difference between the 3 to 4 shift and the torque converter locking and unlocking in 3rd gear. There’s a good difference in rpms between the 2 shift types.
