Get one for a 2001 IIRC. it is an offset gear style starter and cranks very fast. It has a two bolt mount instead of three but it slides in no problem. The only modification was that I had to enlarge the smaller ring terminal just a bit.
Glow plugs not needed at 70 degrees or higher
mine will start at 60 with out them but any lower it needs them
I bought a TYC new starter but found my battery cable connections were the issue and starter spins so fast
following year batteries would not crank it after a GP cycle
I figured it would always glow unless oil temp was over a certain temperature. I had my relay disconnected even, just trying to see if this crate would start with a real weak hole.
GREAT point on battery cables. I still have crusty ones but I did clean all connections with a steel brush and a Dremmel wheel.
I too have the tyc from rockauto.com darn affordable and does bolt on . Put on on my brother in law's truck too. That thing has not started that well in years.
GP on time and strategy depends on what processor you have. Older naw# models are on every time you crank. My newer tde# processor takes temp into consideration.

Glad to hear the TYC works well for you. For now I have a spare.
