Hello all, I have alway wanted a 4x4 duelly pickup to haul my RZR with. But i havent found one that i like the looks of in the newer model until i saw the 2017 superdutys and al the obs 4x4 trucks are beat up or 20000 plus. I having done a little research and some extra parts from my last build will try to make the truck that i want out of my little f 250 supercab 2wd 7.3l.
Here is the goal list
i want it to have 4x4
it needs to be a duelly
must be a obs or 2017 new super cab
needs 400 hp to the wheels
33x10x... tires and wheels
little to no lift
4.10+ gears
there may be more but that is the start of the plan.
I believe it should cost me around 15000 to build? And take about 2 years. What do you all think about this set up and can motor make that much and still pull 10000lbs on a trailer?
I can't comment on how well that setup would pull since I am far from the towing guru around here. As far as cost vs upgrades, I would think that amount would be slightly high if anything, especially if you plan to do most of the work. What parts do you have left from your previous build? D60s typically go for 1200-2000. Are you planning on getting a 4x4 trans or running a divorced transfer case? Do you think it is really necessary for a dually for that load? If you just want the aesthetics that's fine but I'm pretty sure I yanked my gooseneck with around the same load as you across the country on 35" tires and SRW with no issues at all. If you're set on dually, you'll either need a new (wider) rear axle or spacers.
Also keep in mind that they didn't have OEM short bed duallys. It has been done, but just be prepared for a little custom work on the bed.
Keep us updated with pictures, and don't forget the sxs! they're the best!
Arrowcraft does doolie conversion stuff. That could make life easier. You will have to decide on your front axle choice and then determine how to achieve 4x4 attachment based on ride height.
That hp level is very reasonable and should tow fine.
I would go about it from a different angle. I'd make Shorty truck look nice and workable, as close to stock as possible. Watch for one more like you want and buy it, sell this one. You might spiffy-up and sell a couple of them while you are looking for your ultimate truck.
Its going to cost less to buy a good used truck that fits your needs. But if you like the journey then go for it. My 3 hour tour has turned into the highway to hell.
Thank you for the encouragement. I have a dana 60 high pinoin kingpin axle and the matching dana 80 duelly with 4.10 gears. Off a old 89 cab and chassis and a divorced 205 transfer case that needs to be rebuilt. 10 steel duel rims. There isnt any obs trucks around here that is as nice as my shorty and i went to college in my truck and 50000 miles of trips and fun. I am the second owner and the first just drove it like a car to work and back 60 miles aday. I plan to buy a built 4x4 transmission and a stock or atlas transfer case.
That dually rear may not have a speed sensor in it. Look for 92 and newer then plan on rebuilding it with a long pinion set up and save the yoke from the srw if it is long pinion.
Here is a picture of the axle that I have and i will post one of the front axle to. I think that little plug in on the rear is the sensor am i correct in that?
That is a nice set of axles. It looks like the rear will work as long as it wasn't a cab and chassis truck, which has a 2.5" wide leaf pack and a narrower drum to drum dimension. All this can be got a round with cutting and welding I think.
Well to my knowledge it was a cab and chassis truck. Why would it not work on my truck? I have a 92 2wd duelly axle but it isn't half as tuff looking as this one.
