Original seat on my '55 was completely roached out. I bought new foam, burlap and a tweed/vinyl seat cover. The back foam came from F100 central and I think I know why it was cheaper than the tapered stuff from mid fifty. The 3" base foam came from mid fifty and has no stains, contoured to the seat, and is wrapped in plastic. My questions are... do I have to trim the back foam to be even with the bars, or does it overlap? It looks like when I push the bottom foam all the way back, that it fits perfectly flush. The problem is the back won't tilt forward, and this is before the covers are even on. I am thinking that I should taper the back part of the bottom foam to accommodate the tilting seat? If this is the case, I am really glad I didn't buy the 5" foam for my '55, and they should warn us in the catalog! Next question is should I hog ring the burlap separately? Use any kind of adhesive (foam to cover, or foam to burlap)?
After your put whatever surface treatment on the seat frame, you'll want to hogring the burlap to the frame. There shouldn't be any need to glue any parts together. On the foam, before you do any trimming, I would want to dry fit the assembly: burlap, jute (or similar), foam, and cover. With everything in place, I would pull the cover tight until the desired look is achieved. Only then would I check to ensure that the seat can move - and it certainly should. Trim if you must. Take your time and mind your lines & tightness.
Jimmy,
I did my seat winter before last with MidFifty stuff. If I was doing it again I think I would have substituted the burlap for canvas. The posts I read explained the canvas spread your weight around more than the burlap does, giving you better support & helps spring life.

Was the back foam the same size as the frame, or was it like mine where it is bigger?
I bought new foam from Mid Fifty and the back was just fine. My bottom foam was about two inches too short. I had to buy some extra foam and spray glue to make it the correct size.
You can cut the foam with an electric carving/fillet knife.

Reason: added cutting the foam.
Mid fifty is looking into what happened with the seat cover/foam. Here is a picture of how it looks with two layers of that 1/2" or 1" stuff the cover came with. I cannot find a picture of the rear of the back of the seat to see where to attach the cover? I see bars on the side of the back, but nothing on the top/bottom. Maybe I am missing something? Looks like something goes on those triangle shaped cutouts on the vertical braces?
aybe I am missing a rod?I have a feeling I am going to have to cut the foam down, and would like to fasten either the top or bottom, stretch it and see how much foam I need to cut/taper down.
