Looking for good info on a V10 to 6.0/6.4 conversion gas to diesel..no I don't want a Cummins

I'm back to looking at Excursions again....I see a number of cheap low mileage V10s available compared to pricey Diesels that are beat to death or have a lot of miles...

First...I don't want to put a Cummins in it....I don't want to put a 6 cyl engine in what was a 8 cyl truck...plus I'm in California and I don't want to take the chance of a misunderstanding and a lot of money has been spent....

I've searched the forums and googled until my eyes have bled...LOL...the question is...is there any solid/complete info out there in regards to putting a Powerstroke into a gas Excursion. A lot of the forum posts I have seen are incomplete or sparse on information...

Does anyone know of any shops in Southern California that perform this conversion, is there a parts list out there if one wants to buy a crate engine and buy the rest of the parts needed to complete a build...any info would be helpful except for telling me to put a Cummins in it or it can't be done...LOL

Thanks in advance

Since you don't want to do it the easier way, go find a F250/350 diesel that has been wrecked, that is newer than your truck, and transfer EVERYTHING mechanical/electrical over to it. Everything.

You will need a complete donor vehicle, otherwise the parts/cost/labor will kill your budget.

This way you are just moving parts from one vehicle to another. Check coparts to see what is out there. Of course you will still need to fix all the flaws inherent in the 6.0 and 6.4 engine platforms.

I saw your build, read the entire thread... that wasn't easy...that was a work of art.....

If I just buy a crate engine and pull new parts from a OEM supplier or Dealer will the cost exceed 20-25k,,,,

Thank you, not easy if you do it right.

I know it will be cheaper to buy a doner. For that matter it might be better to buy a 6.7 donor. Check out coparts to get an idea.

Why would you want to put an 8 cylinder engine in what should be a 10 cylinder truck?

Pretty sure the old one looked at this from every angle and brings you the proper advice.

This question is a fair one and I would undertake this swap before I would try the cummins.

Reason is:

OEM configuration even if the body started out a V10 or V8.

Now would I go thru that work for a diesel 6.0 or the other one.....NO!

Would I do it for a 7.3 diesel? YES! If I wanted to spend $30K to do it right.

New OEM motor $17,000 will be the bulk of the cost.

Buy a rolled or totaled 7.3 diesel excursion. A pick up won't have the correct pcm, and may have other minor differences.

Buy the nice V10 or V8 excursion you want and pull body off frame. Pull body off totaled diesel. Send transmission of diesel off to be rebuilt by someone good. Swap parts to totaled excursion and put new motor in. Than put new engine and trans in. Put the body of pristine excursion on diesel frame, motor etc.

Now for $30K you could just buy a worn out 7.3 excursion with a bad motor and spend $30K making it new again, with less issues.

Keep it simple if you have the budget then, just buy a CABT conversion. Done!

The thing about switching bodies is I would be very concerned about buying a tweaked frame, that can be dangerous. You bring up a good point about buying the wrecked truck in that the PCM/Electronics may not be all I need....the 250/350 idea sounded fantastic because I was thinking I could pick up the heavy duty springs as well....so I'll have to ponder this....

Those trucks are fantastic but they don't do used trucks and that makes them way out of budget...would love to have one though

What the heck is wrong with finding one of those nice, cheap, low mile great shape V-10 EXs and just enjoying it? It's not like the 6.8 is a dog or an unreliable problem child, and with a few little tweeks it can handle even the heavy jobs pretty well. And all the while when you are enjoying that sweet V-10 that 20K that you didn't spend can be out making lots of new friends in the stock market.
But I understand, it's your money, your truck and your goals and I in no way am looking to tell anyone how to spend their money, I'm just offing my opinion and personal view is all.

Have you actually spoken with them in regards to supplying a clean '16 6.7 SD for an EX build? Just curious if they still looking to builds "new" EXs now that the SD has changed body style.

LOL..I can appreciate the sentiment....especially as a former owner of a 454 Suburban, but I just want a diesel this time around and I'm dead set on a Excursion diesel...I just would prefer a fresher and not beat to death one, which is why I'm looking at the conversion...
