Why delete?

Hi guys. Looking at a used 2013 deleted. What is the point of deleting? And how can I tell if it has ever been "chipped" or tuned?

My understanding is if you do a full delete. EGR and SCR/DEF delete, the truck will not run right. So it must have a programmer of some sort (i.e. H&S/Spartan/SCT).

I did a full delete on my 2012 and it ran a whole hell of a lot nice. Better fuel mileage, no Regens and more power. It sounds great too!!!!

So my guess would be that it has some sort of chip that turned up the power a whole bunch too? I've never been a fan of turning up the power the trucks were built and rated at a set power, to me turning hem up just shortens the lifespan.

It's not an actual chip though, this is just a tune which is a different set of instructions for the computer to manage the injectors, often shift points, and other commands. These can be changed more easily, but if your concern is how it affects the lifespan, that too can be an issue. Based on posts from many people that have had deletes done, there are basic tunes that wouldn't do this, but I believe there are others too that do pull more power from the truck.

Something else to think about with trucks that have been deleted, they will no longer meet emissions standards. Depending on the area you are in this can be a significant problem.

I think most people though go through the delete process to eliminate the DEF and regen process. This by itself and the simple tune allow the engine to "breathe" easier giving a little more power and fuel MPG (small increase). Side effects though are a more traditional diesel that produces more smoke and again won't pass any emissions test.

Tuners do all sorts of things from changing fuel mix to shift points to tpms. If a modern day truck is deleted you must use a tuner to either reprogram the computer to function properly or basically fool the truck into thinking nothing has been removed. Folks delete to make the truck more reliable and extend the life of the motor. Sure you can shorten the life by running a high tune and beating on the truck. The trans and rear end were only made to handle so much torque and hp. As well as the heads a rest of the engine. Deleting is the best thing you can do to a Diesel however I would not touch one used if I did not know the previous owner and everything about the delete and tuner.
