Hey Guys,
My oil pressure light keeps flickering, or very dimly coming on every once in a while. My gauge is telling me that I have 40-60 psi.I dont get what is going on? I thought the light came on indicating that the oil pressure was too low... its a 390. anybody ever heard of this?
the oil well leading to the idiot light switch could be plugged from dirty oil. It might benefit you to find some sort of oil cleaning additive from your parts store and do several filter changes. Maybe change the filter twice per one oil change and run the oil for only a 1000 miles for a couple of changes. Seems to me you said your engine has been sitting in the parts truck for a while and gumming up and drying out does not take much.
Just as a reminder, the oil pressure light (idiot) uses a different sending unit than the oil pressure gauge. If not experiencing problems with the other gauges; fuel, temp, etc., then I would assume the Constant Voltage Regular (CVR), a small metal unit attached to the back of the instrument panel is okay. The gauges require a good ground, I have found the plastic 'sweeping speedo' instrument panels seems to operated more efficiently if I add a ground strap. Installed both type gauges in my 65 standard cab basically consist installing an adapter for the separate sending units then run red/white wire from the 'oil pressure' sending unit to the gauge then tie into the CVR blk/grn circuit.
When I first put the motor in the truck, all of the gauges worked in the sweeping style dash I had, but as time went on, I lost my oil pressure gauge, then I lost my water temp gauge... and now the idiot light is flickering every once in a while.. Its odd. I said hell with it and put a manual water temp and oil pressure gauge in so I can make it to a F100 show about 100 miles away from my house next week. Think that this CVR thing is the culprit to my problems...? if so how would I test it...
Bad grounds can wreak havoc too. You have a plastic instrument panel so make sure you have the braided metal strap from the panel to the metal dash. I have never tested a cvr but I would assume that it should have a constant voltage or it is bunk. No pun intended and if cheap enough just buy a new one.

cvr doesn't control the idiot light, just the 3 gauges. I'd replace the sender.

All trucks I've worked on it is not a braided metal strap, just a wire. It even had its own number.
