Dana 44 vs 60-3

So What are the differences between the two? I thought my truck had a 44 but the cover looks more like a 60. The door plate says it came with a 9" and that is not what it now has. I didn't see anything clearly mentioned in the shop manual.
Thanks. john

There should be raised numbers with either a 60 or 44 on the top of the casting toward the front.

I haven't been able to find any numbers like that. I do have stampings on the passenger side of the tube: "456 A", "2809 4", and "4 46B2". I haven't been able to match them with on-line references since most seam to only go back to '67.
Thanks.

AXLE code stamped on the 2nd line-far right of the Warranty Plate, riveted to the left door face below the latch.

1966 F100 could have a Ford 9" or with Limited Slip: Dana 44, Dana 60.2 or Dana 60.3.

The Dana 60.2 & 60.3 are not Dana 60's, as 60's were only installed in F250's.

1959 thru today: If the AXLE code begins w/a letter: Limited Slip. If w/a number, no Limited Slip.

Thanks ND. You deciphered my warranty plate in the past. What I am wondering is what are the physical differences between the 44, 60.2 and 60.3?

ND, I understand that the breaks and axle bearings and seals are the same as the 9" in the 60.2 & 60.3. Is that why you say it's not a Dana 60? Smaller axle shafts I assume. Any info on the shaft size or spline count? I have a Dana 60.3 I may rebuild to replace my 9". Would the 9" axle shafts be the same as the 60.3 by chance?

No.
The Dana 60 was only installed in F250's that have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle. F250 brakes are larger than F100's.

Ford 9 inch, Dana 44, Dana 60.2 & Dana 60.3 were installed in F100's that have 5 lug wheels on a 5.50" bolt circle.

Thanks, still wondering how unique the axle shafts of a 60.3 are or if they are similar to the 9" like the brakes.

The 11" x 1 3/4" rear brakes are similar: 1948/52 F1; 1953/67 F100, regardless of what rear axles these trucks came with.

1964 F100 2WD was the first to have self adjusting brakes. Self adjusting brakes for F100 4WD's introduced in 1967.
