Drove my 03 navigator this weekend from Kansas City MO to Minneapolis. Trip back noticed that driving slow on city streets causes my rpms to shoot to 2.5k to 3k and have to feather it to grab first or second gear. OD light went flashing and usually turning the car off and on clears it. After that everything just drove normally, I can cruise the highway at 2k rpm at 70-80mph easily.
I scan the code and I got P0781 and P0782 which explains the hard shifting between 1-2 and 2-3. This seems to be a common issue with 4R100 transmissions. Current mileage is 221k and not sure if the trans was rebuilt before, fluid is still ok (pinkish and not burnt) Seems to be overfilled. I've been driving this truck in the lake of the ozarks (which is a 3hr drive) with no issues but seems to be having issues with longer than that.. KCMO to IOWA is around 3hr and another 3hr+ from IOWA to MN.
Anybody got the same issue before and got it fixed without a rebuild?
I'm thinking of taking the pan off, inspect it for debris and put fresh fluid and filter and clean the valve body this weekend. I'm still researching on what to use to upgrade the valve body (transgo or sonnax) or at that mileage a rebuild is inevitable anyway.
tore up the valve body this weekend and found the culprit with my bad 1st gear experience. The accumulator valve spring is broken, new sonnax accumulator spring kit for all the springs and a new spring for the 1-2 valve in the main valve body fixed the issue. 9 qts of fresh mercon v and new filter and she's back for more travel time.
