Odd Noise During Hard Acceleration When Loaded
I just got back from a week off work and a 1,000+ mile trip exploring Northeast and Central Oregon. We hit a lot of back roads exploring and the truck got quite a workout hauling my travel trailer, kayak, and bike, as well as a couple bed loads of firewood we scavenged for campfires (it was cold the entire trip!) while we were out exploring.
The truck performed flawlessly, although I did notice an odd noise a few times when having to accelerate hard from a dead stop to merge with traffic. The only time I noticed it was when I had the trailer hooked up and really had to punch it from a full stop. To me it almost sounded like the exhaust rubbing on something, but it could just be the normal noise from the engine while the turbo is trying to spool. I would only hear the noise when I dipped heavy into the throttle for a second or two and then it would go away. At about the same time the noise stopped, I noticed the turbo finally building boost and the truck would go from anemically crawling off the line to pulling like a freight train up to speed. I'm guessing some of this lag is due to the larger turbo on the '15 and '16s as well as programming to prevent the truck from puking the trans or driveline out the bottom.
The truck was at the dealer to get the oil pan and front timing cover resealed right before the trip, which involved the trans and whole front end of the truck being pulled off, so I'm wondering if maybe an exhaust hanger didn't get reinstalled correctly or possibly even a boost tube, which is creating this odd noise as the engine twists in its mounts on takeoff under load, causing something to rub that shouldn't. I plan to crawl under it for an inspection later this week when the weather dries out, but I thought I'd see if you all had any ideas.
Here's one of the many pics from our trip. This was a lunch spot we found after climbing an unmarked trail just outside of the Painted Hills. The views were epic!
Thanks in advance for any input!
Certainly crawl under there and have a look.
I'd look at the clutch fan blades too if you suspect engine movement. That is one of the places that can touch too.
