Hey guys, it has been two years since I've done a snow melt contest and I'm ready to do another. Maine just got slammed with three storms back-to-back and the F3 body shell on blocks in my yard is almost completely buried. It will melt someday but it's up to you to guess when. I have prizes for the winner.
For those of you who remember and participated last time...here is a link - it was a lot of fun and we had a pretty close ending between three members who picked dates very close to each other.
Out of more than 40 members, Toby Tough was the winner, and remarkably he was the first person to send me an official guess.
OK, so here are the 2017 rules if you want to join in:
Take a look at the pictures below. There is a 1949 F3 in my yard under all that snow. Same one that is in my signature pic. Forget all about what the groundhog said on Feb 2nd.
The snow has to be fully fully melted on the truck and at all areas on the ground within a radius exactly half a truck's length away. I'll let mother nature do all the melting with no help whatsoever. The ground is frozen hard, but as spring comes I'll ram a couple stakes in the ground to mark the radius well before it melts near that point and take update pictures for everyone.
Send me a Private Message with your date guess and if AM or PM.
Only PM's will be used for the list. You can reply here but I'll need a PM too. If a tie, then first PM to me wins.
Winner take all. Second and third place will get an honorable mention. Outside the U.S. members can take a stab at it too. All guesses have to be from members or moderators on this particular '48 to '56 forum. No guesses on the list after March 1st for obvious reasons.
The prize will be a new F1 t-shirt (L), a new F1 ball cap, and a jar of top-shelf honey from my bee hives. I have a stash of extra parts from my projects and if there is something you need that will fit in the box we can talk about that too.
OK, I'm ready if you are. Bring on spring and lets have some optimistic guesses that the snow won't be here in May although it has happened before.
This sort of thing helps me get through the winter until I can work outside on the frame again. Like last time, I'll provide update pictures periodically.
Tom
The guesses are pouring in, and I'm noting them down.
Nice range of dates so far.
If you are a new member who can't send PM's yet, OK to reply here and that will count.
I'll even take guesses from you guys in Texas who are getting 90 degrees right now.
Tom, Not to highjack your thread, but what do you do with your bees with snow like that?
Mark
I have some insulated wrap that goes over the hive and leaves enough room for them to fly in/out as needed. Bees don't hibernate in the winter and will come out to go to the bathroom if the temp gets over 40 degrees even for a short period of time. I'll knock off the snow if it starts to block the air and exit holes.
Some local beekeepers don't wrap their hives at all...and the bees do OK most years.
Mark, send in a guess and maybe you'll win some of their honey.
Tom
Tom, How about April,8 at noon. It has been unseasonably warm here, 70s, and my bees are bringing in bright yellow pollen. Everything is still dead here, so I don't know where they are getting it.
Mark
OK, not sure if I can PM yet, but for a chance at some real honey i'll take a shot here in the thread! Also, I'm in Sacramento CA, so what exactly IS all that white stuff all over your truck, anyway? It looks cold!
So, after much in-depth scientific investigation (that required throwing a dart at my truck calendar) I'm in for March 28th, 1:00 PM...
I'm in... Sent ya my day... We don't see much of that white stuff here in the Phoenix Valley (Arizona), but my guess is in and I think your white stuff is going to last a while...

Nice try Jerry but in case you don't know, that white stuff up in the Sierras is what brings you all that water. If you live downstream from the Oroville Dam you may learn more soon. Hope your flood insurance is paid up there in Sacramento.
Yeah, I've spent enough time in the Sierras to recognize that cold looking white stuff, but what I didn't know was that in Michigan, the stuff seems to fall in so many bright and pretty colors!
And yeah Sacramento is downstream from oh, just about Everything...

Up here we think "how many slushies can I make with all that" ...haha, Just kidding, We got over 4 feet of the stuff last week, sure brought out the Road Crazy Don't know How To Drive Club. Now it's half gone.
