Look at how the motor sits in your truck with the front and rear mounts. No 400M used mounts like that so you would likely need to start by reworking how the motor does mount. The aftermarket has a side to side mount that would bolt between your frame rails underneath the engine. Then you'd probably need to eliminate the current rear engine mount and work on a mount underneath the transmission to support its weight since the engine would not be supported at the rear like it is now.
I would not do it - I'd either get the 352 rebuilt or get another FE to replace it. Far, far simpler, cleaner and with as rare as your truck is I really think it would otherwise negatively affect the value.
Just some thoughts. Others are sure to have varying opinions.
the truck has not ran for about 30 years, motor has no starter the carb is just sitting on the intake and there was no rad. so its pretty nasty inside with rust. i drained the oil pan and got about a qrt of water came out, then the oil that was all clumped up and it won't turn over when i manual try and turn it over with a wrench
The only reason to consider a 400 IMO is if you already have a really good one. I suggest you try to find a 390 out of a car and bolt it in. They are not so easy to find anymore but they are around.
i have benn looking for another 352 but nothing a friend has the running 400 with tranny from a 79 crew cab that had collector plates on it and everythigns there like motor mounts and a rear crossmember computer etc.. as he removed to put a cummins in it.
If you want to go with the 400M then the mounts that bolt to the motor directly might be handy. You'd just need something to fill the space between those and the frame. Something sorta like these - but for 400M.
the FE engines seem to be hard to find around here
thats why i am thinking about the 400 as the price is right for me, its just a matter of how i am gunna put it in. i would get the frame mounts on the front and the rear crossmember
so correct me if i am wrong but the 66 frame would be narrower then the 79 frame
and if i have motor mounts for a 79 frame shouldn't i be able to slightly modify the 400 mounts to be able to bolt to my frame the same style as the 79?
some progress with the truck at this point got me a parts truck
i have a running driving 76 camper special with a 390 but it has a c6 tranny attached
my plan is to remove the motor / tranny and take any other parts i will want from the RWD 76
then if all goes well i will put my np 435 on to the 390 and re bolt it back in to the truck
dose anyone have anything they know about this swap
any tips or tricks for what i am doing
what should i look out for
what did you guys do that u wish you would have done different if you did something similar ?
To make the 390 work with your existing motor mounts you will need to take the bellhousing and timing chain cover from your 352 and transplant them on the 390. This will require pulling the harmonic balancer and the spacer behind it to get the covers off of each one. The spacer can be a real bear sometimes.
got the parts truck home just waiting on the weather to warm up to drop in the 390. thanks for all the info guys i hope it goes off with out a hitch lol
on another note i am going to look at a 58 f350 rwd dually flat bed this weekend anything i should look out for on those third generation trucks it has a straight 6 with a 4 speed
but how am i able to tell if it was a cab-and-chassis or a stake???
