'61-'64 f100 non gm sourced front disk brake converison,90s f450 straight axle brake
Hey i was wondering if anyone has found a front disk brake converison off a ford vehicle, as i dont take kindly to putting gm parts on my ford, not that gm is bad but...its a principle, so if i can avoid it i will, i noticed a few months back a 92-96/97 ford 'i believe it was a f450, with a straight axle, i took pics but it wasnt my truck so i wasnt about to get under it and use a flashlight...so has anyone ever looked at the 92-96 straight axles?
And does anyone know of whether a stand alone abs kit or abs system that works alone i could get off a car to run until i get a tbi, and computer system?
The thing I immediately start thinking about is clearance between wheel and rotors. The F350 in 1992 used rotors larger than 12" in diameter. F450 would likely be as large if not larger diameter.
Next thing would be width of the axle. Likely quite a bit wider than your 1964 axle.
Then wheels. What would you do for wheels in this case? The F450 has what, 10 hub bolts?
I would not worry about abs brakes period. They are useless on my work van as noted by sliding through stop signs in the snow. If you are going to use a factory computer controller for the engine you would have to look into reprogramming it to ignore the abs.
Well i never said i was a loyalist, per say, like all makes, prefer ford, its just if i can avod cross breedong i like too,but if thats what it takes ,it is what it is ya know, everything has its pros and cons and that goes for aleverything
I believe in building non *******s too, but that usually refers to the power plant. If you have a Ford truck then run a Ford engine, Dodge gets a mopar...etc. When it comes to things like brakes I don't think it is always stamped right on the part as to who made them. It is likely a lot harder to tell what brakes and wheel pattern you have at the car show then a wrong motor. If you are budget minded as I am (thrifty to be politically correct) then run what works and gets you down the boulevard.
Just a thought, anybody try and see if an econoline knuckle would fit the king pins on a f100 ? I just parked a few 97 super dutys, knuckles kinda large, but maybe a 91 or older E150 might work.
I think the reason you don't see Ford kits is because the mounting method of GM calipers is so much simpler - bolts and a rather simple bracket, rather than pins and a rather complicated bracket. It is simply cheaper to produce brackets for GM calipers.
The question is not can it be done. The question is how much do you want to spend in order to make it happen so that your Ford is "all Ford?" It will require some degree of customization to adapt any non stock brake system. Can you design and make the required parts and modifications or will you have to pay a machinist? If you have to pay someone, then it will be a very expensive project.
