1989 bed bolts

To those of you who have swapped or just pulled your beds, (wait this is for those rust belt truck guys). What bolts did you use to replace the OEM bolts? Mine are not worth reusing, heck, two of them would have to have added steel cut from the top of them. Had to weld retaining devices to the top due to them spinning while trying to remove them.

you can still buy them from ford, but it is going to cost you around $130

or you can get some carrage bolts and call it good for around $10

Thanks Tom. I going to see if I can get button head allen bolts, just thought of those after looking over the ones I pulled out.

the originals were metric.

Grade 8 bolts, flat washers and Nylock nuts. The zinc coating on the grade 8 resist the rust the best. And if you are worried about the head of the bolt getting caught when sliding things in the bed, DONT. They sit below the ribs of the bed.

Also they are 1/2 diameter bolts you want.

4 are one length 2 are another

Stainless bolts would seem like a good investment.

Putting anti-seize on the bolts would also be a good idea.

Wow, just found out after working on my superduty bed that the bolts I got from RAP will work out great, so I ordered another set for my "89" f150, should work out fine.

You must not have a rust issue where you live

Why do you say that? I do have rust issues here, we are a salt state, I'm in Michigan. I have had the bolts I'm talking about have been in my super duty for like six months. I do keep a vinyl cover on the bed most of the time but they do get exposed to the weather. I don't know what type of coating is on the bolts but they are keeping their finish. Time will tell. I do like the fact that the bolts you spoke of have a head that is below the crown of the ribs in the bed. The grade eight bolts you spoke of, are they button head allen or hex head? Because if the ones in the bed now start to rust, the ones you spoke of will go in.
I HATE RUST!
Thanks Diesel_Brad. Please let me know on the bolts.

Dennis

I almost always use anti-seize, when I don't I use thread locker of some sort.

The problem with the SuperDuty bed bolts is 2 fold

1. They are a self taping bolt that strips of any antiseeze you may put on.

2. the metal clips rot away and then when you go to remove the bolts, the clips break and just spin.

You would be MUCH better off with a regular Nut and Bolt
