loose wire help
Can anyone help identify the loose white wire near the oil fill cap in this photo? I followed it to the module above the accelerator pedal in the second photo. what is this for and what should it be connected to? Thanks for any help.

I believe it is the kick down switch for a three speed with overdrive. I may be wrong with the name of the switch, but the wire connects to the negative side of the coil. I read a post from daveenglson from 10/15.

John J - A blue wire and red wire go from the accelerator module (kick down switch) to another module(?) on the engine side of the firewall and then continue to the drivers side of the transmission. A different white wire goes from the accelerator module to the passenger side of the transmission.
Jowilker - How can you tell that the wire is not correct?
Yankbs - The truck is a 1965 F100 352 with 3 speed overdrive. It's new to me, and since I've had it I can not seem to get the overdrive to engage. When I disengage the overdrive I notice no difference in performance. So, considering the other wiring I described above, your suggestion sounds reasonable. I'll look at the post you mentioned and do a little more research on the transmission overdrive.
Can anyone else confirm that it's the transmission overdrive switch?

I'm not sure what the switch on a 65 looks like but the one you have would serve the same purpose as any other. The wire goes to the negative side of the coil, it kills the engine for a split second, that causes a rpm drop which allows the trans to shift out of OD and back to conventional drive. This whole operation only works when the OD handle is pushed IN. when it's in the pulled OUT position the trans is locked in convention drive.

Check the glass fuse (shown as 14526) in the relay to see if it has blown.
The overdrive will not engage until the truck reaches 30-35 MPH (preferable in 3rd). This is how it worked on my former 1965 F100 352 with overdrive that I bought new 3/1965.
I sold the truck 11/2009, so I've forgotten if the cable has to be all the way out, or all the way in to engage it.
To disengage it, the truck has to be at a complete stop, or when in overdrive and you punch the pedal to the floor, it will kick out, then the cable can be moved.
FTE member daveengleson has a 1965 F100 with overdrive (see post #8), so he will know how it operates.

As NumberDummy stated. the trans won't go into over drive until it reaches a certain speed, somewhere between 27-30 or so, that is controlled by the governor on the passenger side of the trans. Besides what happens inside the trans mechanically when the handle is pushed IN all four electrical components must work properly.

I connected the lonely wire to the negative side of the coil - Nothing blew up!
I took it for a drive and Viola! The overdrive works now, like you said about 30-35 mph it'll kick in when I let off the accelerator.

I have been around these trucks since were new, have owned a few, and know it did not come from the factory.
Now seems others have chimed in that might know how this add on was used.
