Hi. Whilst the truck is off the road am taking the opportunity to replace the transmission gasket as it's leaking. What type of oil should go back in? I hope it's cheaper than the stuff I just put back in our range rover!
While you are under the truck look at the dipstick tube, the "O" ring is easy to replace. I suppose that there are large auto supply stores in the U.K. who will have fluid that can be used in a C6 cheaper than Range Rover specific.
Good Luck
Relatively easy. My C6 took 12 quarts to fill, but it was bone dry. I can't imagine there are enough C6 trannys in England to support a market for parts and fluid, but I could be wrong.
If I were you I would buy a full case of 12. It won't take that much since you are only draining and re-filling but it will be close. There should also be a drain plug in the torque convertor. Drain that convertor also. It alone will hold 2 to 3 quarts of old fluid. If you remove that lower bell housing access cover that faces forward you should see this plug. You might have to slowly spin the engine until you see it. If you do drain the convertor also, this will net the tranny taking about 9-10 quarts. But you don't want to over fill so I would suggest putting 7 in it 1st. Start up the engine and let it idle for a bit to heat up the tranny fluid. Run the shift lever through all the gears slowly a few times to get the fluid all through the tranny. Once the fluid is warmed up add fluid and keep checking the dipstick until the tranny is correctly full.

Thanks Jeffafa. This is something I need to do as well.
It sounds like you are just draining the sump. You won't need but 8 quarts to refill. No reason to drain the Torque Convertor. But if you did if can take up to 4 quarts to refill.
The type of fluid depends upon whether it has been rebuilt in the last 20+ years. The original bands and clutches were an "organic" compound and they required a type "F" fluid. If the transmission has been rebuilt they would most likely have used the newer non-organic material and, in that case, you would use a Dexron fluid.

Is there a way to tell the difference such as color?

Why would you want to keep up to 4 quarts of old fluid in the tranny? Once the engine is started that old fluid will go through the tranny.

Color is the same red. The only way I know of is to send a sample to a lab. The two fluids should not be mixed so careful. Trans slippage usually occurs if someone does.
