I have had my 03 F250 FX4 for a few years now. I recently bought a large enclosed trailer and decided to hook my up power trailer brakes. Bought a module and the Ford pigtail........
my question is: why is there power on the module all the time? It took me a bit and I let it sit for a while and the led lights went out on the newly installed brake controller. I poked around for a bit and it goes right to the battery, no way to have the 12VDC switched unless I splice it in. I guess this is normal, it is the first one I have done so that is why I am asking. Will it kill the battery? I have a commuter car and this baby sits until the weekend.
Well, you don't specify which controller, so no answer is guaranteed correct. However, I had a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 that came on every time I started the truck, performed a self diagnostic, reported no trailer connected (unless of course, one was connected), then shut itself down after a few minutes.
So yours sounds normal.

I have the same P3. If I remember correctly it has a built in timer to power off after 15 minutes.
If the OP's controller doesn't shut off on its own after say 15 minutes I would return it and find one that does. The P3 is a nice unit and it cost around $140. I think that is pretty cheap for a critical piece of equipment.
One thing.. if manual transmission and owner forgets to put in First Gear, truck and trailer starts rolling down a grade and engine is OFF... trailer brakes will still work.
and I agree on the P3. real good unit and company.
Sorry for NOT stating which controller I purchased. I prodigy P2, it came from Uhaul store. Which means they put it in their packaging and was less expensive than buying it at the RV store.
So I feel like you guys answered my question I thought it was weird to NOT have power switched to the ignition, I guess the is normal. I learned something...........
