I am currently running Cooper AT3 tires and I don't like them for a few reasons..
1. Fairly loud tire
2. Horrible in snow/rain
3. They don't self clean in mud/snow
4. Maybe 40k mile tire. I have 25k on them now and they look like I may get another year before hitting the wear bars.
I have 3 other co-workers who run the same tire and they have the same complaints.
I am looking for the following characterists for my new tires.
1. Quiet!
2. decent siphoning so I don't loose traction in the rain/snow.
3. 50k mile tire or better.
4. Load Rating E
I balance/rotate my tires every 4k miles so 50k should be pretty easy out of any decent made tire.
My wife has an older explorer 1999 and she runs the Michelin LTX tires. After 3 years of summer only driving (she has dedicated winter tires) they still look brand new. I have been really impressed with the tires on her rig.
I went to a few tire dealers and they have tried to sell me on the following.
1. Bridgestone Dueller Revo 2 (Dealer said they are built so the sound goes back into the tire to help quiet them down). BS?
2. Michelin LTX M/S 2 or AT
3. BF Goodrich AT KO2's
Out of the those 3, I like the way the siphoning is built into the Michelin's, plus they looks less aggressive so I assume they will be quieter.
I don't mind running a dedicated winter tire if I need to. I just want a decent summer tire that does ok in the rain that is quiet.
Oh, I should also mention I don't tow often and my bed is pretty much empty all the time.
IMHO say BFG K/O's out of those. Not terrible aggressive but nice to have if you ever do venture off the paved surface. Plus should get you to the 50K. I ran two sets of the revos on my f-150 and loved them. Those were the original revos though. I have heard and read the reviews on the revo 2's and seems they have fallen away from the glory they used to have. I know quite a few love the michelins. I am also picky when it comes to tires plus the towing (cargo trailer and camper) plus my snow plowing in the winter the michelins don't do it for me. But I use my tires totally different as well . I think you would love the traction offered by the Goodyear Duratracs, you probably could get the 50K, my buddy has 75K on his but with the abuse I put mine through I average around 30.
I had the older K/O's. My dad runs the newer ones. Honestly I didn't feel the BFG's were noisy but also have the diesel knock that drowns out tire noise normally.
I have the Michelin LTX ms 2 tires on my truck, 2008 f250 diesel 4x4....I have in the neighborhood of 120,000 km on them and still above the wear bars and getting decent snow traction...yes that's right I said 120,000 km lol. Rotated regularly....quiet tire, good snow /rain traction, great tire for highway and towing. Only aspect I don;t have much experience to relay is how good they are in a lot of mud.....Any mud I've been in I've never had a problem....tires also get decent traction in sand as I have the truck on the beach in the summer. I'm definitely getting another set of these in the fall.
If you don't like the cooper at in the snow, you wont like the Michelins in snow. I have the cooper ats on my Colorado, have about 50k on them now, are close to the wear bars. Seemed to be an ok tire for all around use, not the best in mud but ok in deep snow.
My new f250 has the Michelins on it. The Michelins suck in deep snow. Only have had my truck since late December , so don't know what these tires will do on muddy forest roads yet. But, I will likely be putting the BF at's or goodyear duratrax on booth my trucks next fall.
Most tires that are good on snow / ice wont last very long as they will have a soft rubber compound.
The Hankook Dyna Pro ATMs that I put on my wife's F150 have been pretty good tires. They currently have 48k on them and will probably make it to 55k. Her truck sees mostly pavement and they do good in the snow and are quieter than the BFG AT KOs I'm running.
My favorite tires I have owned are firestone destination AT, dueller revo2, and toyo At2. In that order. My main issue with the toyo at2s is the life of the tire. Others were great in almost every way.
I just got KO2s a couple of days ago, so I can't really post an extensive review. I will say that I don't notice any more road noise than the Firestone Transforce AT they replaced. And I didn't notice any noise from those.
As stated in my other post on tire size upgrade, I have driven in some familiar areas where I know the nuances of the road or parking lot. Bumps and rough patches that were very noticeable with the Firestones seem to have the jolts softened by the BFG.
Been using the Firestone Revo2's for awhile now. On my second set. Got 60k out of the first set. Roation's around 7k give or take. Awesome in the rain that we have here in central Florida. I don't do much off road, but I haven't had any issues when i do. I will say they are really great in wet grass. Pretty quite to as it is my daily driver for the most part. That and there are Firestone dealers all over. Have a problem, pull in and get a new one.
