1947 1/2 Vs 1 ton box difference.

Sorry if this has been answered before but i did try searching.
What are the difference between a 1/2 ton to 1 ton box.
From my understanding 1 ton they are wider and must be must be longer due to wheel base difference.
Can some give me the exact measurements of a 1/2 ton box, and what differences are the fender, just the wheel opening size, or are they shorter also.

Thanks

I was just looking at your progress on your other post. The box metal looks really good.
The dimensions of the half ton box:

The rear fender is roughly 27" X 55". The inside box width measurement is 49".

Thanks for the info.
I am thinking of cutting 8" out of the front of my box and was trying to figure out things.

If you have a good 1 ton box I hate to hear of it being cut up. The half ton boxes are a lot easier to find, and are being re-produced.

I understand they make repo 1/2 ton boxes, but if my thinking is correct, my 1 ton rear fenders are longer than a 1/2 ton and won't fit on the 1/2 ton box and i don't think the value of my box/fenders would pay for a new 1/2 ton box/fenders. My box does need some rust repair also.

I think that if you cut down the box it would open a can of worms. Wouldn't you have to cut both ends of the box and also make it shorter in height? Then it would be a narrow box with tubs which would be cool.

But then the 1 ton frame is different than the 1/2 ton frame. It is longer and maybe heavier, I haven't owned a 1 ton. Also you would have the fender issue.

I think that you should do what you want to do. However a lot of labor would be involved.

The 1 ton is such a cool truck as is. I am in favor of installing a modern drive train and suspension. I have an idea that you could make it as quick as you want it to be, and make it handle well.

The advantage i have is my labor is free.
I think by shorting the front of the box 8 inches would look good and bring the proportion in line with the body. I not worried about the frame as it will be cut out behind the cab and a new one welded in to do the pro street look with very large tire.
Something like this truck i am aiming for.

Just to make clear, the box i have is from my 1 ton mercury. I just think the box looks to long in stock form.

So something like this. If you shorten the front of the box you can retain the original fenders? Sounds like you have a plan and I can see that you get things done. It is good to see your progress!

I think there are people who would be glad to trade you a half ton box for that tonner with fenders and tailgate. Especially if you are ok with the 48 and newer fenders like the green truck seems to have.
