Filter change

How many miles should I go before changing fuel filters and air filter?

couple different schools of thought here.
the computer will tell you when the fuel filters need to be changed.
the air filter has a minder on it that you can monitor for its change.

I on the other hand...don't follow the computer. I change my fuel filters every 15K. Air filter I pull it out the old fashioned way and have a look. I changed mine at 20K. Thought it was dirty enough.

Check your Air Filter Restriction Gauge every time you have your hood open, change the Air Filter when it's indicated. My 2016 manual says to change fuel filters every 22,500 miles.

I go 15k on the filters. Even when I change them at 15k, they look new. I'm really strict about where I buy fuel. 98% it is from one high volume truck stop. Others need to change at shorter intervals because their fuel supply isn't great.

If you want a good chuckle, join the 6.7 Power Stroke Facebook page and watch those guys preach 5k intervals. They post pics of "dirty" filters that have just been stained by the fuel with phrases like " this is why I change em every oil change."

As to the air filters, I have an S&B. When I had my factory one, it looked pretty rough at 20k miles so I changed it.

Just did my fuel filters for the first time today at 15K. Filters were discolored, but clean when I looked through the pleats. Don't think I would have had any issues going out to 20K. But I wanted to see where they were at before pushing interval past 15k. As to the air filter, I've looked at the minder which is barely showing any yellow yet. I'll pull it out at 20k and have a look, this style filter is tough to judge visually though.

I am a newer diesel owner and my 2015 has 24,000 miles on it. I have changed the frame mounted filter twice and only found it to be discolored. I also drain the separator frequently when below 3/4 of a tank but have difficulty determining if water is present. The liquid has a greenish color when it comes out but is more yellow than green when I put it into a glass container and let it sit. I would have expected to see a separation of color if water was present. I generally fuel at the same location and have not had a water in fuel warning.

What should I be looking for? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you let it sit, water will show up at the bottom of the jar. It will look something like the bubble in a level sitting on the bottom if it's just a little bit. More may look like and entire separate layer on the bottom. If you see nothing like that, you're good. If you want to see what water will look like, add some to your jar and it will be instantly clear to you.

Thank you. I had not thought to add water to the jar and will try that. I really appreciate these forums and threads.

I changed my first ones at 10k. I just wanted to see what they looked like and see the quality of fuel I was getting around here. They looked great. Will go 15k this time.

Just a point of clarification, you are changing the under-hood filter as well, correct? the fuel filter kit comes with both, but you only mention the frame mounted filter. there is also one on the engine.

Pardon my intrusion if you are, but didnt mention it.

Has anyone waited until the computer tells you to change the fuel filters? On my '15 I had the first fuel filter change at 25,000 mi. and still no message. I have no problem going by the IOLM for oil, and I really don't with the fuel either, but I was changing oil and it just seemed like the time to do it.

As for the air filter just let the filter minder tell you when it needs changed, pulling the filter and inspecting just opens up the system for dirt intrusion. I have several diesel engines and we have always went by what the filter minder has read.

I know it wasn't asked by the OP, but I recently did an OC and IOLM went off at about 9,700 mi. I have 3.31 rear end and do roughly 95% highway summer and fall. I sent in a sample and it came back excellent, so I will continue to follow it.

I haven't on either my 6.4 or 6.7. I even carry a spare set of fuel filters in the truck just in case of a bad batch of fuel. I don't like pushing the envelope that far as these injectors are expensive and the pumps are too. I just look at it as better preventative maintenance.

Cheap insurance to pull the filters sooner rather than later.

The computer does not know the condition of either. It just goes off of data to determine.

Your gut can be more accurate.

The only time I would advise anyone to change fuel filters at less than 20k is if they have an aux fuel tank.

I change them every other oil change, and, I change the oil when the truck tells me to. Works for me.
