I was wondering those who have installed the power booster kit how well it works. Did anybody have to add a electric vaccum pump? Are all the kits about the same or does anybody know which one is best to buy I hope to purchase one next month along with a front disk brake kit and reverse eye springs for the front and back. Then new smooth wheels, caps, beauty rings Anybody with the toyota power steering kit and what are your thoughts??? Thanks for all the help, Bob
Well TraderBob, I don't know what year truck you have, but I just ordered the v-shaped, bolt on Toyota bracket and pitman arm from MID-Fifty for my 56. I allready have the Toyota box and I'm going to install a tilt column at the same time. You can buy a kit to use the original steering column, but mine is screwed up. This seems to be the best way to add power steering to an F-1 or F-100
Hi 29abone, thanks for your reply, are you staying with the straight axel? Let know how your install goes, I hope to be doing mine next month and I plane to use my tock column. I have a 53 . Bob
i used a kit from these peple and i am very pleased with the results. i do not need a elec. vac. pump. the hookup to the carb. works great. it is a pain in the *** to get the bearing adapter on the orig. spindle. if you are interested i can tell you how i got it on.
Hi, thanks, all the help I can get would be great. I have not heard that there was a problem with the bearings-adapter. Good to hear the brakes work good for you. Bob
they make a great kit, it has new bearings, races, even new dust caps. everthing bolts up. all the parts are first class. the bearing adapter is the only problem. i had to do the following to get it on.
1) use emery cloth on spindle to take it down so the adapter would almost go on (just about 1 inch wide at the back)
Hi Dale, I got my brakes on and the booster. All seems to work fine but my brake padal goes 2/3 rds of the way down before the brakes take hold, and the brake light goes on. I put a "T" in the line to the front for the brake switch. What did you do for a switch? I'm thinking I should go to a different switch so the brakes lights come on sooner than they are. ???? I have no problem stopping but not sure about the pedal going down so fare??? Bob
Not trying to insult your intelligence, but have to ask the obvious questions:
-Did you bleed the system well?
-If you changed the M/C, did you bench bleed that before installing?
-Check your brake pushrod length. The return spring may bring the pedal back up, but the pushrod might not be touching the M/C piston.
Hi Ernie, bench bleed m/c, and bleed the systom untill no air starting at the longest line, down to the shortest. My return spring is not on at this time, pedal retuns back up just fine. Will give the systom another bleeding and see what happens. Bob
i had to bleed mine over and over again. is the boster under the floor. my kit came with a parporting value attached to the booster and the brake switch went on the value.
Bob, if there is air in the system the pedal will be very soft. I don't mean it will go down two-thirds of the way before you get resistance, I mean the resistance will gradually build up over a lot of pedal travel. It sure is possible that air is the culprit, but I'm thinking you've got a linkage rod or something in the booster that isn't making contact until you move the pedal quite a ways. Just another thought.
