im at my wits end and need answers from the experts here. i have a 77 4x4 302 4 speed 2 barrell and it wont idle unless i really rev it up hard then it will litterally idle all day long ive tried it the exhaust smells extremly rich and i mean bad i can tollarte alot of fumes but these really gage me for the first time in my life ive replaced the plugs wires cap rotor coil fuel pump fuel filter twice all the vacume lines carb and intake gaskets check valve on the power brakes the truck runs great down the road or as i said at idle if i really rev it up but if your tring to stop at a sign or what ever it just dies when it dies theres no hard starting just bump the key and it starts right up ive tried checking the timing and ajusting the jets still runs rich no matter what the carb is the motorcraft 2100/50 not sure witch anything please i cant really aford a shop or telling me to buy a new carb 300 dollars is alot for a 400 dollar truck thanks for all your help in advance
If you're talking about those screws down at the bottom on both sides, those are the idle mixture needles, not jets. They control the fuel/air mixture only at idle.
Try turning both of those screws clockwise, all the way in (not too tight, just touching bottom). Then back both screws out 2.5 turns. Use that for an initial setting, then adjust your idle speed screw (next to the throttle linkage) to get the right idle speed.
hey bubba im sorry yes it was the idle mixture screws i adjusted and i did it just like you said turn them in then back out 2 turns like i said it idles fine if you really rev the snot out of it then it will idle just finebut if your coming to a stop it will just die as soon as you put the clutch in im not real tallented at three footing a stick going down a hill
