88 F-150 302 - just noticed a humming or buzzing sound coming from either behind the dash or just inside the engine compartment. When I switch to the rear tank it goes away...switch to the front tank it returns. What gives?
noises in vehicles are hard to trace - sound travels faster through metal than it does through air... are you sure it's not coming from the in-tank fuel pump? My dad had one similar to your truck and had several problems with the fuel pumps on it.
Ok, checked last night and the vibration/humming sound is coming from the fuel pump directly below the drivers door. It is very bad running the front tank and only slightly noticeable running the rear tank. Is this the main fuel pump and if so why would it make this noise only with the front tank? Problem with front tank pump?
If you have separate in-tank pumps I'd start looking for a new front one... The one you have is probably on it's way out. If you just have a single pump under the door as you say I'd look for a clogged up fuel screen or something else in the front tank causing a restriction and making the pump work harder (you may want to check this even if it is an in-tank pump). My dad's was a '92 with the in-tank pumps and I know of two that that he had to have replaced on his before he sold it, but I can't remember if they were in the front or rear. His was new enough at the time the dealer covered it.
