Lincoln Navigator COP

Ok, I bought a high mileage Navigator to pull my work trailer. Since a month ago, I have had three coils and plugs replaced (#5, 6, and 7) at the dealer. Two were back to back, and number seven started acting up a week ago, I had it replaced today, and now it's not running right again. I find it hard to believe they are simply going out one at a time, back to back. The dealer is charging $260 every time I have one replaced, and at this point, I can't afford to fix it anymore. Is there something else going on, and the dealer isn't looking for it perhaps? Any help is appreciated.

What year and how many miles? I suspect a couple of possible things. You had a misfire on a cylinder. They pulled the plug and it looked bad (probably original, since they're a pain to change). They threw in a coil for good measure. Problem solved on that cylinder. Rinse and repeat 2 more times. Every other spark plug is probably original and worn out, and either causing the misfire and/or wearing out the coil jumping the large gap in the old plugs.

For what you paid, you could have bought OEM plugs, all 8 coils (rockauto, ebay) AND paid an independent shop to put it all in and solve the problems. I'm betting with all 8 plugs and coils you'll be fine for a long time. I also bet the coils haven't been necessarily bad each time, either. Most of the time it's just the boot. However, if it were me and I was already there, I'd buy replacement coils for the remaining 5 and just have them all new, and save what you have for spares.

The above is just a guess of course without seeing the vehicle.

Thanks for the response Brandon. I have an 04 model, with 185,000 miles on it. You are correct, they have been original plugs, they gave me the old ones when they pulled them. I am shocked that once they started going, it seems they are all going one at a time.

Were they OEM plugs or the original plugs? If original and 185k, I'd expect a misfire or two.
To Brandon's point, if they pull out a COP, chances are the boot was cracked and if not, it is now, after removal.
Once they got under the hood, I could understand how it might not just be coincidental.

The best I could tell, they were the original plugs. The mechanic seems to think so as well.

Why are you shocked? They all have the same mileage on them, so it stand to reason they would all reach their end of life cycle about the same time.
