2006 Expedition codes P0344 & P0581

My '06 Expy w/ 5.4l had the check engine light came on last night. Truck runs fine, with no driveability issues at all. I took it to AutoZone and 2 codes came up. The P0581 is problems with the cruise control, which has not worked in months, but I am interested in code P0344. The AutoZone printout shows it to be a cam sensor condition, with possible wiring or ignition system failures.

Any thoughts or experience troubleshooting this code ?? Taking a road trip in a couple of weeks and don;t want to leave if this is a possible breakdown situation.

Thanks in advance.

The cruise control is not so important to repair, however it is probably a wiring issue for the controls, maybe on the steering wheel controls. It has to be diagnosed further.

Anyway, the P0344 must be repaired before you venture out on any road trip. It may be a wiring issue or a bad cam position senor on bank 1, passenger side. I'd start with that. There are some notes that a bad battery or weak starter could trigger this fault in some vehicles, but not sure how true that statement is.

Ditto on replacing the cam sensor. For the cruise problem, the tilt wheel causes a tugging action on the connectors going to the multi function switch. It can get tight enough to break the retaining clips on the connectors and cause them to be pulled out slightly.

Thanks for the info Skauber and alloro. I replaced the cam sensor this morning and the check engine light is out. Keeping my fingers crossed. Now on to the cruise control. alloro, the connectors you are talking about are behind the air bag ? correct ??

You do not have to remove the airbag or steering wheel. Remove just the upper steering column shroud and you'll see 2 large connectors plugged into the back of the multi function switch. Check to see if those connectors are in all the way.
