don't be like me

well, today was one of my distracted moments..

BD tomorrow, off to get the dually washed..

have to remove the car hauler bumper hitch, cause it won't fit in the carwash otherwise..

grabbed the keys, unlock the hitch, lock the pin back in, put the hitch in the shop, grab the exhaust for the trailer gennie (need some tools or parts)..
close the bed cover for the wash.. and off we go..

get almost to town (6 miles) and it dawns on me that the handful of keys isn't in the truck.. doah, left them on the bumper.. not there..

slow walk and drive over the covered 6 miles.. nada..

you know that task you set for yourself, make a backup set of keys..
uh... well.. uh.. .. hadn't got to it!.. so the backups are lost too.

off to the camper store, buy another barrel key for the gas door lock and to the locksmith for the locking gas caps.. (now have one key that unlocks both), and a new hitch lock (cheaper than disassembling the lock and cutting a new key.).

so, $60..

I will have to buy a new trailer ball latch lock (wanted one anyhow) and two new hasp locks for the car hauler doors. (keyed the same this time)

lost the spare key for the hotrod gas door (can get one made) and its spare remote door control. bummer..

so, now I am making a bag with the backup keys on their own tag, and a smaller set of the other keys.

the locksmith spent maybe 10 minutes total (including writing up the bill)

hand cut a key for the gas caps, and picked the lock for the hitch pin.

Could have been a whole lot worse....

About ten years ago I was distracted and forgot I unhitched a trailer and didn't move my Excursion out of the way. Debating on whether to unhitch or leave hitched to remove the riding law mower from it. Riding lawn mower was put on the trailer at a loading dock. Anyways, the yard trailer tipped up and the trailer tongue went through the back doors of my excursion... At least they were fiberglass so the fix wasn't so bad.

Now when I get distracted, I start all over from the beginning. And for keys, whenever I leave I do the *********, spectacles, wallet and watch routine. Except I am looking for keys, wallet, and cell phone.

I was going to tell you all of the things I have forgotten, but I can't remember them.
I used to try and keep a list of things to remember, but I could never remember where I put it. It only gets worse with age too. Beware!

I did remember to fill up the dog feeder today, for which I received NO "thank you"s. Dang unappreciative dogs.

On my last ATV/RV trip last fall I got out of the shower at the end of the day to find my wedding ring missing. It was tight on me too and I almost needed soap to get it off. Never fell off in almost a decade prior or even had a close call. Not a clue what happened but thank god my wife was with me on the trip so I didn't have to explain...

I was at a dealer last wk when lady beside me hooked up her 5th wheel deck to her SD and proceeded to load a tractor and mower. When tractor got into deck the ball coupler came off the truck and her tractor trailer and mower rolled down hill into front of mySD . I felt bad for her , my truck can be fixed but she had a wild ride and was lucky not to get hurt

I had these pills to help with my memory, but I forgot where I put them. And I kept forgetting to take them anyways.

I wish I could remember what they called too...

Your dogs did thank you, they didn't chew the heck out of something because you didn't feed them.

---

Karl4Cat - Most definitely.

--
Lawrecew - That is one heck of a story... I bet she needed a wardrobe change after that.

My dogs thank you for your support. I am now down to just 4, all rescue dogs of widely divergent sizes and styles.

I guess they do show me some appreciation by not peeing on my truck tires. A friend came over yesterday in his Silverado and they got at least two of his.
I reckon they's Ford dogs all right and don't care much for Chevys.

I hope I'm not like you AGAIN. I did this some years ago only, it was way harder to get resolved as the locksmith in town at the time was very inexperienced.

Sam, I have done very similar things before. Now I have so many duplicates made in so many places, I just can't remember where I've put them
