Hi guys, a little rusty. Doing my transmission filter and fluid. C6 Auto. Who ever did it last went crazy with orange rtv gasket cement. I thought the last time I did one I put the cork gasket on dry. I haven't done one in almost 10 years. Should I use any rtv sealant?

The only orange RTV I'm familiar with is marketed as sensor-safe; I like this stuff because it's easy to remove when later disassembling things but I generally don't use RTV for anything not involving water. For this gasket, I would use Permatex No. 2.

Gasket Sealants : Permatex® Form-A-Gasket® No. 2 Sealant

I would not use anything if you can get away with it. If you do use some, put a very small trail on the part and smear it flat with your finger. You don't want big pieces of rtv falling into the pan and clogging up the filter.

Sight down the pan with your eye when you have it off. If the holes have been bent by someone over-tightening the bolts, put the edge of the pan on a strong table and take a hammer and smack the holes down flat to try and even it back out.

one last thing. I also drained the tork converter. Is that plug tapered. I don't think I screw it in all the way? Just double checking.

Sealant or glue is not needed.
ANYWHERE.
The drain plug is tapered as in pipe thread.

Using RTV defeats the purpose of the gasket IMO. I've been a mechanic for over 20 years and I see stuff coming in all the time where people insisted on coating the gaskets with RTV. Cork gaskets are designed to swell and expand when exposed to oil. I've also seen blind holes that were so packed full of RTV the pan bolts either stripped out or cracked the casting when they were tightened. About the only places I ever use it are on differential covers and to seal the corners on oil pans, intakes, and timing covers.
