1968 F-600 axle code F8D, 15" dia x 4" wide brakes, wheel cylinders (2 per wheel) Wagner FE 83712. New Brake Hardware Kit from NAPA, #2318. Next to the notched wheel on the adjusters (the female part) is a circular spring that fits in a groove. It goes all the way around the adjuster, overlaps about 5/16" and then each end goes up, makes a U and back down. This gap then anchors on the brake shoe frame. There are two of these per wheel, one for each adjuster. One of them is broken, and the other doesn't look too good. I cannot find a source for these springs. Has anyone had any experience with these or know a source for them. I would like to get 4. The adjusters have a threaded male part that pushes against the brake shoe and the female part fits in a block that is grooved to fit the shoe and push against a block on the backing plate. Now, question #2: The wheel cylinders have sheet metal shields on them. They are above both the upper and lower wheel cylinders. I found a photo of a similar setup for a Ford truck, but the adjuster system was completely different. On this one, the shield on top was above the cylinder and the one on the bottom was below the cylinder. Does anyone know the correct position? Good chance someone has been in there before me. Thanks, hope someone can help me with this.
Have you been to http://www.fordification.com ? They may have a parts diagram for that axle. You need some part #s before anything else. If not, maybe Number Dummy (Bill) can help.
I am assuming you have Kelsey Hayes 15" X 4" REAR brakes. I can't really tell but I think you are talking about Ford part number D1TZ2A190A. I can't post pictures like Bill can but if you Google/Bing that number a few places pop up. Ya might call them and have them look at the part over the phone with you. Report back and let me know.
Correct, it is the rear brakes. When you're too close to something, sometimes you forget the obvious. I googled the part # and found a number of examples. Unfortunately thats not what I have. I was able to get that part from NAPA and it was wrong. The springs I have make a complete circle and actually overlap at least 5/16", then the ends turn up 90 degrees and then make a 180 U turn. They fit in a groove on the female threaded part of the adjuster next to the notched adjuster wheel. The two ends that turn up fit on either side of the brake shoe frame. Besides Kelsey-Hayes, I have also seen Gunite listed. I don't know what brand I have. Maybe Bill will see the post and come to the rescue!

Reason: bad spelling
I looked at some other reference pages on the web. Looks like Kelsey- Hayes and Gunite are the same thing. Don't know if I am on "probation" or not. I do have pics of the brakes before I took them apart, but don't know how to post them. I will try and figure it out.
No, the spring is mounted on the female threaded portion of the self adjusting brake adjuster. Maybe it is a part of the adjuster and not available separately. According to the rules posted, I'm not allowed to post attachments, so I guess pics are out. Thanks, I'm going to google brakes adjusters.

No, that's not it either. Received a message from another member, have emailed him photos and he is to post them on this thread. Hope it all works out.

Thanks Ted. In the 1st pic, you can see the broken spring in the upper left hand quadrant just behind the self adjuster lever return spring. In the 2nd pic you can see the good spring in the lower right hand quadrant just to the right of the notched adjusting wheel. The spring for that adjuster lever is removed, or rather it failed and fell out when the wheels and drum were removed. Hope this looks familiar to someone. The spring kit I got from NAPA does not exactly match the other springs, but it's close. It only has the shoe return springs and adjuster lever springs and hold down hardware. I thought it would have the small springs I am looking for, but did not.
