I was looking into purchasing a 2011 6.7 with 122k miles. I was also looking at a 2010 6.4 with 87k. Which is the better deal? I know the 6.4 has some issues but i havent heard much on the 6.7. What do you guys think?
6.4 is good but I'm not sure about how long, I had one and it was good for 150k but required close eye on tearing up water pumps, tstats, rads and egr coolers are fragile.
6.7 is real good, much better mpg, much better transmission, nice power. If it's a real early build (before 3/11) it could have exhaust valve failure.
If you tow a lot they're both great but the 6.7 does a little better on fuel and transmission dept.
While I agree with most of what ruschejj said I will say that my 6.4 was super dependable and I never had any of the issues that he reported. 6.4's are bad for turbo lag but if you can deal with that then I'm sure you'd be just as happy as you would be with a 6.7. I'm also assuming the 6.4 should be a little better deal. Even if they are the same price you need to keep in mind the 6.4 has 35,000 less miles on it. I ran my 6.4 up to 202,000km without doing anything aside from front brakes and a belt tensioner that began to squeal a bit. As mentioned some of the '11 6.7's had bad exhaust valves that cost big dollars to repair. So in the end I'd say it's a toss up and go for the one you can get a better deal on.
The 6.7 would be my choice. Better (in my opinion) in every aspect if leaving it stock. The best thing about the 6.4 is what it can do tuned. I prefer a tuned 6.7 over a tuned 6.4 because of the refinement of the power and where it will actually make it. I use to hate pulling up at a light in my 6.4 with the big tunes and watching it haze at idle. 6.7 won't do it. The tuned '15s will run with a tuned 6.4 if that's what you are into.
Like the guys above I have owned both. In stock mode the 6.7L is a much better mannered truck during regen. That is doubly true if you are doing a lot of in town driving.
With the DPF deleted the 6.4L is awesome to drive. It has a lot of power. Of course deleting the DPF is against federal and many states law and will not pass emissions inspection.
You will also get a bit of warranty with the 6.4L and I think if you hurry you might be able to get an extended warranty. It depends on the inservice date I think. But if you delete the DPF that will void it.
I am not getting much better mileage with my 6.7L.
let me add this: If you can't stand a 4 or 5000 dollar repair without wrecking your life don't get either one. It is risky to own any diesel built after 2007 out of warranty. These trucks can and do have very costly failures.
I simply wouldn't own a 6.4 PSD. Too many issues and gotcha's that will cost you $$$ big time. In addition I've yet to meet someone with one that bragged about the fuel economy in stock configuration as well. Good luck...

I've had them all, no question, the 6.7 is the way to go.
