4.9L 300: Large sparks off Starter Solenoid while turning key
Hello
I have a 1984 Ford F-150 with the inline 6, 4.9L 300, and it seems to have something shorting or grounded incorrectly. When I turn the key to start the car, it sparks at the Starter Solenoid and the engine lags, as if the battery doesn't have enough juice to turn it over.
The weird thing is, it doesn't do it all the time, if the engine turns over right away, it doesn't spark; it is only after 2 or 3 times of turning over does it spark. After the engine is running, I get no further sparks.
Is this a bad starter? Or, is something else going on?
It's a fairly new solenoid; I've replaced the starter, the solenoid, the major cables; I'm wondering if it's the starter, and the company gave me the wrong one, twice... and, I double-checked the wires to make sure they're tight.
My son's 1984 did the same thing. The cable going from the solenoid to the starter [positive] was just a little loose at the solenoid. Once tightened, no more problem.
