New to the forum, I have just been given a very very beat up f100.
I would really like to make it a clean running and driving vehicles for the weekends.
It has no motor or trans, my uncle who had the car could only tell me the following.
Camaro sub frame is set up for power steering and power disc brakes. Rear end orginal.
I know I can do most of the work however I have never put in a engine and trans on my own.
Recommendations for what motor to use for ease of install but still have some power?
I was looking at a 331 or a 302.
Any suggestion or guidence would be great.
Easiest Ford engine would be the 302. Easiest engine overall to install would be any OHV Chevy small block V8.
First, before you put a single dollar or minute's time into it Contact your state DMV and find out what you need to do to obtain a title in your name, then do it immediately. Depending on how the Camaro clip was installed the factory stamped serial # on the passenger side top flange of the original frame just in front of the firewall may have been cut or ground off. That is the only LEGAL identifier for the entire truck. If it is missing, illegible, or doesn't match whatever paperwork your uncle gave you for the truck or if he didn't have any transferable paperwork in his name, you may need to jump thru hoops with your DMV, and possibly may not be able to title it at all. If the number is there (starts and ends with a star) and is on a stolen vehicle list, the state may confiscate it. So take care of the paperwork right away!
There is more than one spot the numbers were stamped, on the 56 or at least the ones built here in Canada they were both on top of left frame rail, one on top of steering box the next 2 feet back from that.
a good 302 and a aod, trans , are a good swap for theses trucks, aod trans are cable operated so no electronics required, 302 are every where, cheap ,make good power and are well supported buy the aftermarket for parts, George.
Do you have digital pix of your truck from digital camera or phone on your computer? If so it is easy to add them to a post (assuming the file is not too large). Find the pic on your computer and leave it open while you come here in another window. Compose a post, click where you want the pic to appear in the post. Click on the picture icon at the top of the posting box (looks like a postcard with mountains and sun) A dialog box will open asking if you want to drag a pic onto the box or browse your computer to find it. If you have the pic open, go there, right click anywhere on the pic and chose copy from the menu. Come back to your post and right click on the box. Select paste from the menu. Your picture should appear (it may take a few seconds to load) in the box. Now left click on the insert button.
If the stars all aligned your picture should now be in your post window. Select post to have it appear on the forum or repeat to add more pix. Some cameras make huge files these days that are larger than the forum limits. You may need to resize or resample the picture and save the smaller file version with whatever picture editing software came with your picture taking device before you can post it.
Whatever year the camaro subframe is, is the year of chevy motor to use V-8; V-6. Find out if the motor mounts are still on it and go from there. Stay Chevrolet engine and power steer box, that will be the easiest. If you are a ford purist than with a little work I believe most any ford can be made to work.
