This time of year I inflate to max psi. pressure will drop as the temp drops.
IIRC, it's 1 psi for every 10*F. If you go to max psi, say 75 psi (fronts on my superduty), when the temp is 40* and the temp gets to -30* in the winter, there is a 70* temp diff which will be a 7 psi pressure drop.
I aim for normal inflation levels, but sometimes add a couple of PSI if colder weather is coming. I'm located in Fairbanks. I would think that the best traction would come when a tire is inflated to the recommended amount with load being considered.

When I lived in Fairbanks I over inflated to avoid "square tires". I have seen tires come off the rims at 30 below. I now live in Anchorage and may add a lb or two but that's all.
