I have an 01 2wd with 6.8L, 149K and had her for about 3 years now. Today I went out to leave work, inserted key and went to turn it on. As I reached the say 3/4 position all the dash lights came on as usual and then I heard a small "click" sound as I finished turning the key, then is just went loose. The key now has no resistance. it just sort of "free spins". not all of the way around or anything. She did not start and the dash lights are still on. Had to disconnect the battery to get dash lights off. Any ideas? thanks
Isn't there a little plastic "rack & pinion" looking gear set in there... maybe a tooth broke off? Not sure on the Excursion, never had it apart (yet).
Im not sure if there is a "rack n pinion" thing or not? I took the key cylinder out and it looks fine. Cylinder turns freely with the key in it , in my hand but when I insert it into the steering column and turn the key, it still just "free spins" no resistance. truck won't start but the dash lights are all still stuck on in what I'll call the 3/4 position.
Does anyone know for sure if the excursion has an actuator rod or what?
When I pulled the ignition cylinder out, it looked just like the picture you attached. It was not missing the part you circled in red. Does this mean that something in the steer in column is broken? what does the part circled in red turn or operate? thanks http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...3/ford-key.jpg
ignition switch is operated by two plastic/nylon "rods". both located inside an aluminum channel on the steering shaft / housing. the key cylinder actuates them. the two rods connect by a single horizontal pin. if this pin brakes or falls out, the key cylinder looses all function to the ignition switch, even though it still turns in the steering column but you can tell there is no resistance on the key.
heres a pic of the parts for my 01 excursion. ford part 3E723 and 3E715 was what the ford guy told me. I have taken the steering column apart and found the silver pin , in the top piece was out of the hole and not connecting it to the bottom piece that actually moves the ignition switch pin. not sure how the actuator rod pin falls or works its way out. the channel they sit in is pretty snug. it is a pretty intense job so far. lots of parts to get down to it. will try and post more as I work through the job. here is also a youtube video that gave me a good idea of the general procedure.
Well the girl is back together and working like normal. Had a hard time aligning the round gear at the end of the key cylinder with the teeth on the nylon actuator rod (3E723). The first time I put it all back I was off a few teeth and the auxilary position on the key would not work, so had to take the cylinder out and clock it a few teeth. Still not sure why or how the pin that connects the two nylon pieces came out. It is a tight fit and the channel they are in is not very wide. The aerostar video I listed did help in giving the general idea of what I was up against. Hope this helps someone out in the future.
