ESOF solenoid location photo



In my efforts to replace the ESOF solenoid I looked for a photo showing it's location. I found none. So... I took a photo, made some markers therein, and here it is. Hopefully it will be assistance to others.

This helps.

My front hubs don't lock when in 4x4 mode. Engine vacuum system works AFAIK because the heater controls all work and the cruise control works. (I believe both rely on engine vacuum. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

That part is most commonly know as the Pulse Vacuum Hublock (PVH) solenoid. It is what locks/unlocks the front hubs when using the ESOF selector switch. If you plug "PVH Solenoid" (include the quotes) into the search bar, you'll get many relevant threads complete with photos, part number, etc.

They tend to develop two different faults. 1) Leaks vacuum all the time - will cause problems with HVAC outlet controls or 2) Fails to pass vacuum to hubs on command causing a failure of the hubs to engage.

Yeah. It's just the hubs only. I verified by jacking up the front end with the engine running. When in 4x4, the front wheels still spin freely until I lock the hubs.

Blend door works fine to go between floor, dashboard, and defog.

I have not tested it out yet. I downloaded the engine codes w/ software and there was a code indicating the solenoid was bad. I am not much of a mechanic and so it may have been a bad vacuum hose or seal, AFAIK. But, it is an easy attempt at fixing it. 5 minutes, a 1/4" drive socket, 3" extension, and ratchet. I will know when I get a few minutes to test it out.

Never heard of it referred to as a PVH solenoid. Thanks for the info.
