Last evening I was changing the oil, and while under the truck I was examining the undersides for any issues. I noticed an item I never noticed before, and have no Idea what it is for. Attached, it appears only to the exhaust pipe just before the catalytic converter, is a "tank?". It appears to be made of approx. 3" dia. x 12" pipe, and is connected to the exhaust with both a strap of metal and some form of sensor wire or grounding wire. The ends appear to be sealed. It is located under the passenger side front door and inside the frame rail.
Well this isn't the same What is it? but it is a What is it? On the drivers side below the fuel hoe going into the fuel tank there is a "U" shaped piece of metal that is approximately 8" long and about the same depth but there is nothing inside of it being protected it is just bolted to the frame. Any ideas and there is a picture of it in my photo album I just don't know how to get it over here.

My best guess is that it's for side crash protection to maybe keep the fuel filler hose and/or filler cap from being cut in an accident. I mounted my air compressor inside and used a piece of aluminum sheet to close the top and bottom to protect the compressor from the elements.
