i'd be looking for a bad connection somewhere. i feel u have a very high resistance somewhere and not getting the voltage/current to the start side of sol. did u measure the voltage at the sol when in the start position ?? or bad sw

Either a bad solenoid or bad connection from the ignition switch to the solenoid as delawarebill suggests depending on how you are jumping the solenoid to get the starter to spin.

Check the ground connections then check all the rest in the starting circuit . It's a very basic circuit , you'll find it with out to much trouble , but like the man said probably a solenoid terminal problem .

The battery ground cable needs to go to the engine or bellhousing. The engine is isolated from the frame by rubber mounts, so starter current has to work its way back thru the wheel bearings and springs if you ground to the frame. But after you ground to the engine, you need to provide a grounding wire from the engine to the frame and cab.
