Which truck are you talking about? The 150 or 250? The 77 F-250 was still classified a Hiboy being that it had a 34" frame, factory lift blocks, 2 3/4" wide rear springs, divorced transfer case, etc... During 77 1/2 they widened the frame to 38", married the T-case, and lowered the truck (smaller block).
when a reference is made of 1977 vs 1977 1/2 it is specifically about the F250 4X4 F350 4X4 and the F150 supercab 4X4. these three trucks recieved a newly designed chassis in mid 1977. early trucks were the same design as previous years but the 77 1/2 was all new and improved. despite much misinformation the trucks are really much better than the early trucks as they have an improved steering setup, the reverse rotation front axle with disc brakes, the mated transfer case and a few other details that gave these vehicles better articulation and road manners than the earlier trucks. the ground clearance is not significantly different than a hiboy with the same size tires (they came with smaller tires than previous models which makes people think the chassis was lowered. look at my gallery at an otherwise stock truck with 35's on it everyone assumes it is a lifted hiboy!). hawkrod
I know a guy that swears up and down that his 67 F100 4x2 is a hiboy. I can't undestand how something that was so different can raise so much comotion.

He must be related to the guy that was telling me that ford made a 429 with an FE (rounded) bellhousing He then went on to say that he had a set of CJ heads with a casting number of D0VE-CJ.
I argued till I was blue in the face, showing him the books with casting numbers ect.....Finally I gave up and just let him think he knows his stuff.....what an idiot!!
UH hey hawkrod, your front leafs, have you added? My truck is a 79 250 ranger, and its front leafs are somewhat flat, leaving me wondering if it is worth the trouble putting my 35 12.5 on my 16.5 rims that have 31s on them now... I was going to buy 16 inch rims because the tires are so damn expensive, but hey they are brand new bfg mud terrains...and I already have the 16.5 rims !!
well, wasn't the highboy pre 77 1/2 frame not stronger? I was under the impression that it was a 1 ton frame that was heavier than the 77 1/2 and up trucks...
the 77 1/2 -79 F250 and F350 4X4 used the same frame. also the F150 F250 and F350 4X4 supercabs used the same frame as well. the only differences were spring packs and axles and that got blurred a little as there are heavy duty spring options for F250's and also dana 60 front axles on some F250's as well. after having handled the early and later frame i can say the later one is heavier but with all the additional bends it would need more strength compared to the earlier ladder frame. i think it would be a toss up as to actual strength in the fact the later frames are wider and feature shaped members for strength but have additional shapes that cause stress points while the earlier frames are narrower and have super strong side rails but are famous for flexing from side to side. hawkrod
