First Oil Anaylsis

Did my first OA on this truck. I expected a bit better truthfully. It does confirm that I should stick to shorter intervals then what the oil minder thinks.

What kind of numbers did everyone else get?

That doesn't look bad for break-in. I haven't had any samples tested, but I went short on the intervals for the first 12,000 miles then settled in to just accepting what the oil minder says unless the oil has had a particularly rough run. I would have to look at my records but I'm pretty sure that the first 2 changes were between 4,000 and 4,500 miles. The longest I have gone is just over 7,000.

I did my first oil change at 3456 miles just to get my baselines with the oil I'd be using and it's been a practice of mine to do the first oil change early on all our new vehicles. So at 8860 miles, I sent my first oil sample with 5404 miles on the oil. Mine came back with high iron and elevated aluminum. They said they didn't feel like it was a big deal because the engine was new and would probably average out within the next 2 oil changes. I'm just about to change oil now and will send it off as I will all of my changes not to extend change intervals but just to keep an eye out for anything that might be going on. 5k oil changes are cheap insurance to me and so is the oil analysis. Fuel was at .05 and that was DPF on tuned so I was happy to see that as well.

I also was down to 300 miles for DEF as well. Guess that will be on or around the 5K mark for me as well.

I thought that was suppose to be higher..around 7500 miles on average.

Scott, I had a few done on my 7.3L, unfortunately the reports went with the truck when I sold it.
I remember my first oil change showed high Iron, Cu and silver also. I had another one done somewhere around 40K and the numbers were more or less average so I never bothered with it again. Sold her with 242K running strong.

I doubt that you will see much more than 5,000 on 5 gal of DEF with a dually especially if you do much towing. Consumption is lower in the Winter, but averaging around 16 mpg on fuel during the rest of the year, I see 5,000 to 6,000 miles between DEF fill-ups.

Some of mine was a little higher but right in the ball park of your first OA. My fuel dilution was better though.

How do I get an OA done?
Do you mail the oil off somewhere?
To who?
How much does it cost?
I changed my oil at 2500 miles the first change and switched to rotella synthetic t6 at that time. My plan was to go 10k miles or a year whichever comes first. Is 10k to long to go on synthetic? Realistically the year will come first and I will be at around 8k on oil.

Blackstone labs...one of our site sponsors. They will send you the kits for free. You send them the sample in the kit provided.

Send your payment in with the sample. On average it takes about 2 weeks, You can get it sooner if you need it.

Different level mean different things.

High al...upper motor wear

Iron lower motor wear.

oil dilution..rings or regen issues. Water in the oil..something else.

Hi Scott,

I don't think the difference between a 5,000 and a 7,500 interval is enough to worry about but I also don't think it's important enough to argue. I choose the 7,500 because this engine performs well and it's what ford programs into the ECM. I'm hoping you are enjoying the 6.7. The difference from the 6.4 still makes me a happy driver.

Did you ever do a OA on yours?

It is a nice ride. Slower than the 6.4 but very smooth.
