Typewriter is in my engine bay!

Well 3200 miles total on new truck. first oil change done at the dealer was done at 2500 miles. Had them put in 5-40 full motorcraft synthetic .

Low and behold my $66,000 truck sounds like it has a bad lifter. Erratic and random LOUD typewriter noise from under the hood.

Great, now what? For the dreaded typwriter issue, has there been any relief? I'm thinking of going and getting tha oil modifier from a stealer ship and dumping it in to see if that fixes it. But really, WHAT THE HECK IS MAKING THAT NOISE?

Mine started after the second oil change. After 500 or so miles into the oil change with the 10/30 Motorcraft it would stop ticking. Next oil change, I switched to 5/40 Valvoline. Ticked for the entire 5k mile oil change interval. Just got done changing it today. Went back with the 10/30 Motorcraft. It is very annoying.

Me too. Just had it changed for the first time at 5k and sure enough...the ticking. Sounds like my 05 and 07 cummins when I put more timing in it with the Smarty but MUCH quieter!

I use T6 synthetic and my motor has 82,000 on it. I don't notice any ticking but I remember maybe hearing it a few years ago. You need to work that motor, get some good hard hours on it.

My first oil change I had IBM selectric under the hood. Dealer tech said to drain a quart or so out. I did that so I was a little down the hash mark on the dipstick and she went quiet. perfectly safe to drain some out. There are many here who have drained a bit out and it gets rid of the typewriter.

Ok, can someone get technical and tell us what is causing the ticking? I have not experienced it, but I'm also using T6.

It was 10/12 maybe? My chassis has 202,000 on it. I've been busy, I haven't been all that active on here in a while. So far this month I've driven 4400 miles and have to run another 1600 next week. Needless to say I change my oil every 4-6 weeks. I have 2 cases of oil, 2 fuel filter kits, and a case of Motorcraft oil filters in my garage at all times.

Don't wanna derail the thread but yes, I think the motor smooths out after a while.

I just changed mine the first time. No ticking. I have or had 171 hours on the motor at the time of change.

I also switched to 15-40wt oil.

Most miles are towing.

Mine does this all the time, very annoying.

In other words, they really don't know. But sticking with the recommended weight and not topping off seems to reduce eliminate the typewriter, at least it did in my truck. Just to make sure I, I made the noise come back by filling the crankcase up during the last oil change couple days ago. Drain some out, noise disappeared. Why is a mystery. Seems us daily drivers hear this more than the folks using the trucks to work hard daily.

I've read elsewhere that the factory puts in a dose of Motorcraft XL-17 to prevent this on the new engines, and that adding it with an oil change or as needed helps get rid of the ticking. I haven't tried it yet as I have not gotten my first oil change, but I'm wondering if anyone else on the forum may have tried it and what were the results.
