How the heck can ya be cruel to a damn chicken? Ya ever seen where they slaughter

What the cluck??? Time for some right wing defense... 
I heard some other farm habits that ruffled my feathers, the local egg farm replaces their layers every 90 days. The "old" chickens are "disposed of" in an unknown manner. My father in law maintains their equipment and was told that if we want some layers for our acreage to just go get for free. Kind of cool, but how do I store 20,400 chickens?
