I recently bought a 1999 Exoedition (Eddie Bauer edition) with 107000 miles on it. The car was one owner car of a mother that needed something to get kids to Sunday School and not much more.
When I bought the car, I filled up the tank, and the distance til empty displayy stated about 430 miles. Since buying the car in October, I have added about 3500 miles on the car. Now when I fill up, the DTE is showing about 330 miles. The car is running great, but I am wondering if it might be time for a change of plugs, fuel filter, air filter, etc. and when that is done, I will be back to normal. Losing nearly 100 miles is definitely hurting me.
Or could it just be an issue with my driving style? I try to keep myself below 2K RPM, but sometimes that doesn't work out well! I am wondering if the computer is compensating?
I think the expy had a 28 gallon tank. So the 430 represents a 15mpg. The 330 would represent 12mpg. Most likely driving differences but if you live in a cold weather climate mileage decreases in the winter (different fuel blends and longer idles). Unless you have service history from the previous owner you probably want do perform a 100,000 mile service. Expeditions are not gas friendly vehicles especially for in town driving.
Or could it just be an issue with my driving style?
I would go with this theory. Perhaps you do more city driving than the previous owner did. The DTE calculates the result based on the amount of fuel in the tank times the average MPG. You can reset the system and then everything will be based on your driving instead of the previous owner's.
